The Dynamics of Water Innovation supports water researchers in understanding the timelines that can be expected when investing in, developing and introducing new water and wastewater treatment technologies and processes. It provides a basis for better-informed planning and decision-making through a new model for water innovation adoption, along with historical evidence and examples. After addressing the problem that is being tackled by this book in Chapter 1, case studies are explored in detail in Chapter 2 to provide background on how each of them were commercialized and to show audience what innovation looks like in the water industry. Chapter 3 focuses on development of a set of criteria that can be used to study industry adoption and dissemination of water technologies through various stages of a market adoption model. The authors of this book have tested the applicability of these criteria on a diverse array of over 488 water technologies. Chapter 4 again uses six case studies to analyse new water technology innovations in the last 30 years and investigates the differences in timelines for moving through the various stages of water technology commercialization. Although Chapter 6 proposes a novel framework to measure market impact and technology diffusion, a total of 11 technologies have been applied to this framework in this chapter to show its applicability and the value provided.

Just as space, territory and society can be socially and politically co-constructed, so can water, and thus the construction of hydraulic infrastructures can be mobilised by politicians to consolidate their grip on power while nurturing their own vision of what the nation is or should become. This book delves into the complex and often hidden connection between water, technological advancement and the nation-state, addressing two major questions. First, the arguments deployed consider how water as a resource can be ideologically constructed, imagined and framed to create and reinforce a national identity, and secondly, how the idea of a nation-state can and is materially co-constituted out of the material infrastructure through which water is harnessed and channelled. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) uses advanced numerical models to predict flow, mixing and (bio)-chemical reactions. In drinking water engineering, CFD is increasingly applied to predict the performance of treatment installations and to optimise these installations. A lack of understanding of the hydraulics in drinking water treatment systems has resulted in suboptimal design of installations. The formation of unwanted disinfection-by-products and the energy consumption or use of chemicals is therefore higher than necessary. The aim of this work is to better understand the hydraulic and (bio)-chemical processes in drinking water treatment installations using experimental and numerical techniques. By combining these techniques, CFD modelling is further developed as a tool to evaluate the performance of these installations. This leads to new insights in the applicability of models in ozone and UV systems, and new insights in design concepts of these systems. CFD modelling proves to be a powerful tool to understand the hydrodynamic and (bio)-chemical processes in drinking water systems. If applied properly, accounting for the complex turbulent motions and validated by experiments, this tool leads to a better design of UV reactors, ozone systems and other systems dictated by hydraulics.
