In early 20th century Oakland, California, Martin Eden was a sailor who tried to improve his life by becoming a writer. His tutor Ruth was from the bourgeoise class who's family did not approve their romance. Lizzie was a cannery worker whom Eden rejected but loves him for himself. Ruth and family appreciated him after he became a successful writer. The working class Eden sought self-improvement rather than improvement for his class. In the end, Eden committed suicide by drowning.
