This book teaches readers the fundamentals of innovation and reduces them to practice in the context of entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship. It is a new, fresh look at learning and practicing innovation at the individual level, based on scientific knowledge and in the context of the 21st Century. The first chapter introduces the topic and describes the author’s perspective. Next, an overview of the 21st Century landscape and innovation is presented, as well as a discussion of positioning oneself to stay relevant and fulfilled during the course of one’s career. The third chapter teaches how to think creatively by learning the basics of creative thinking processes. The next chapter builds on creative thinking and describes innovation methods, including design, lateral, and systems thinking, and blue ocean strategies. Examples of organizations with a long history of innovation are presented, followed by ideas on measuring and tracking the innovativeness of organizations. The fifth chapter brings the concepts together to teach about launching an innovation project, particularly in the context of startups. The conclusion summarizes the takeaways. This book is written for engineering students and professionals, but can also be used by those in other disciplines by adapting the engineering analogies.

Innovation Engineering is a practical guide to creating anything new - whether in a large firm, research lab, new venture or even in an innovative student project. As an executive, are you happy with the return on investment of your innovative projects? As an innovator, do you feel confident that you can navigate obstacles and achieve success with your innovative project? The reality is that most innovation projects fail. The challenge in developing any new technology, application, or venture is that the innovator must be able to "execute while also learning". Innovation Engineering, developed and used at UC Berkeley, provides the tactical process, leadership, and behaviors necessary for successful innovation projects. Our validation tests have shown that teams which properly use Innovation Engineering accomplished their innovative projects approximately 4X faster than and with higher quality results. They also on-board new team members faster, they have much fewer unnecessary meetings, and they even report a more positive outlook on the project itself. Inter-woven between the chapters are real-life case studies with some of the world's most successful innovators to provide context, patterns, and playbooks that you can follow. Highly applied, and very realistic, Innovation Engineering builds on 30 years of technology innovation projects within large firms, advanced development labs, and new ventures at UC Berkeley, in Silicon Valley, and globally. If your goal is to create something new and have it successfully used in real life, this book is for you.

This book presents a comprehensive compilation of practical systems engineering models. The application and recognition of systems engineering is spreading rapidly, however there is no book that addresses the availability and usability of systems engineering models. Notable among the models to be included are the V-Model, DEJI Model, and Waterfall Model. There are other models developed for specific organizational needs, which will be identified and presented in a practical template so that other organizations can learn and use them. A better understanding of the models, through a comprehensive book, will make these models more visible, embraced, and applied across the spectrum. Visit for model details. Features Covers applications to both small and large problems Displays decomposition of complex problems into smaller manageable chunks Discusses direct considerations of the pertinent constraints that exist in the problem domain Presents systematic linking of inputs to goals and outputs

Food Engineering Innovations Across the Food Supply Chain discusses the technology advances and innovations into industrial applications to improve supply chain sustainability and food security. The book captures the highlights of the 13th International Congress of Engineering ICEF13 under selected congress themes, including Sustainable Food Systems, Food Security, Advances in Food Process Engineering, Novel Food Processing Technologies, Food Process Systems Engineering and Modeling, among others. Edited by a team of distinguished researchers affiliated to CSIRO, this book is a valuable resource to all involved with the Food Industry and Academia. Feeding the world’s population with safe, nutritious and affordable foods across the globe using finite resources is a challenge. The population of the world is increasing. There are two opposed sub-populations: those who are more affluent and want to decrease their caloric intake, and those who are malnourished and require more caloric and nutritional intake. For sustainable growth, an increasingly integrated systems approach across the whole supply chain is required. Focuses on innovation across the food supply chain beyond the traditional food engineering discipline Brings the integration of on-farm with food factory operations, the inclusion of Industry 4.0 sensing technologies and Internet of Things (IoT) across the food chain to reduce food wastage, water and energy inputs Makes a full intersection into other science domains (operations research, informatics, agriculture and agronomy, machine learning, artificial intelligence and robotics, intelligent packaging, among others)

Western Engineering has earned an international reputation for conducting leading-edge research and offering university students unique learning opportunities. However, the faculty faced many challenges - and celebrated many successes - during its first 45 years. From starting as a department at The University of Western Ontario, to becoming a faculty with graduate programs and research centres and institutes, this history is brought to life through the memories of faculty members, staff and alumni who helped shape the faculty and build its reputation at the local, national and international level. The five academic leaders who guided the Faculty of Engineering Science through this period offered stability through challenging times and fiscal hardships, as well as adapted to societal needs. The growth of the faculty during the first 45 years is a credit to this leadership and the dedication of faculty and staff members, students and alumni.
