Campo, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, ENP-BC, received a Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH and a Master of Science in Nursing Degree from Widener University in Chester PA. Theresa has over 16 years experience in emergency medicine as a Registered Professional Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse. She is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as a Family Nurse Practitioner and The American Nurses Credentialing Center as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner. Currently Dr. Campo works clinically as a nurse practitioner in the Quick Care Center of the Emergency Department in southern New Jersey and is owner and primary lecturer of Farfalla Education LLC. She is an adjunct professor at Case Western Reserve University. Theresa has lectured nationally and internationally as well as authored articles in peer reviewed journals. Dr Campo is the column editor ñ "Cases of Note" column for the Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal. Theresa lives in southern New Jersey with her husband, Jonathan, and their two dogs Brandy and Buck. Keith A. Lafferty, MD, received his B.A. in Biology cum laude from Holy Family University in 1989 and his M.D. from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1994. At the completion of his training his colleagues bestowed him with the "Senior Resident Teaching" award. Following his residency in emergency medicine and a fellowship in critical care, he spent six years in full academics as a medical student and a critical care director. Dr. Lafferty is currently the Student Clerkship Director at Gulf Coast Medical Center, adjunct assistant professor of emergency medicine at Temple University and board member of the Holy Family University Pre-Medical Committee. As a physician, Dr. Lafferty focuses on the critical care of emergency medicine and practices in both Philadelphia and Florida. As an author, he has written numerous chapters and manuscripts, mostly having to do with critical care procedures of emergency medicine, with an emphasis on the airway. He has presented many of his research papers at the local and national levels. Dr. Lafferty has traveled to Haiti, participating in mission expeditions after its devastating earthquake and continues to work and educate Haitian physicians. Those experiences are reminiscent of his own humbled beginnings, growing up with his mother and sister in a Philadelphia housing project. Providing medical care for the most indigent and teaching evidence-based medicine are the essence of his vocation. How does Critical Care work Critical care, also known as intensive care, is a multidisciplinary field of medicine in which patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries receive treatment. The majority of us, whether as patients, family members, or friends of patients, will experience a critical illness or injury. At the scene of an accident, in an ambulance, in the hospital emergency room, or in the operating room, critical care can be provided.

This text was developed to help providers who evaluate low acuity complaints in any setting. The aim is to highlight common pitfalls in the management of those seemingly minor illnesses or injuries, which if not identified early or if managed incorrectly can have devastating and longterm consequences.
