Addresses a wide range of practical and emotional issues faced by patients and caregivers. The rituals not only guide readers through difficult and often unfamiliar territory, but also support them in growing and healing on many levels - whether the path leads into remission or through the end of life. Many rituals are simple and can easily be slipped into everyday routines, such as finding moments to consciously relax and release tension. Other rituals are used in particular circumstances, such as releasing anger or creating meaningful connections with loved ones. This book shines a light on options that otherwise might not be considered, and helps patients and caregivers gain a greater sense of control at a time when so much feels out of control. With warmth and wisdom, Courtney supports readers in bringing greater meaning into their journey, and empowers them to move through the challenges with greater strength and grace. -- Amazon.com

One of the most significant healthcare advances in the latter part of the twentieth century has been the development of the specialty of palliative care. The specialty traditionally draws on the successes of the Western medical model in developing innovative means of controlling pain where cure is not possible. The author of this book argues that while the medical model of palliative care has undoubted strengths in easing pain, that there are nevertheless limitations. Inparticular, while its practitioners are undoubtedly dedicated to the alleviation of suffering, the model itself is limited in its ability to alleviate the psychological and spiritual suffering that often accompanies terminal illness, and thus in helping patients in their total experience of illness. Drawingon the ancient rites of Asklepian healing, Dr Kearney looks at the mythology underlying this model and examines the contemporary relevance of these ideas in terms of healthcare and education. He concludes by proposing a new model for the healing of suffering in healthcare which draws on the best practice of both traditions.

For most people, the thought of dying or caring for a terminally ill friend or family member raises fears and questions as old as humanity: What is a “good death”? What appropriate preparations should be made? How do we best support our loved ones as life draws to its close? In this nondenominational handbook, Richard F. Groves and Henriette Anne Klauser provide comfort, direction, and hope to the dying and their caregivers through nine archetypal stories that illustrate the most common end-of-life concerns. Drawing from personal experiences, the authors offer invaluable guidance on easing emotional pain and navigating this difficult final passage. With a compelling new preface, this edition also features an overview of the hospice movement; a survey of Celtic, Tibetan, Egyptian, and other historic perspectives on the sacred art of dying; as well as various therapies, techniques, and rituals to alleviate suffering, stimulate reflection, and strengthen interpersonal bonds. The American Book of Living and Dying gives us courage to trust our deepest instincts, and reminds us that by telling the stories of those who have passed, we remember, honor, and continue to learn from them.

Approximately two-thirds of deaths in the United States involve a doctor's partnership with an individual, whether it be for the administration of pain relief or sedation or for the act of discontinuing or not beginning life-sustaining treatment. In A Midwife through the Dying Process, Timothy Quill, M.D., explores that partnership and the complex end-of-life issues that surround physician-assisted death. Here are the stories of nine individuals and their very different endings, common only in each person's struggle to confront issues of law and ethics and to realize a "good"death.

As part of a traditional Hindu family residing in a largely Chinese and British society, Anita had been pushed and pulled by cultural and religious customs since she was a little girl. After years of struggling to forge her own path while trying to meet everyone else’s expectations, she had the realization, as a result of her epiphany on the other side, that she had the power to heal herself . . . and that there are miracles in the Universe that she’d never even imagined. In Dying to Be Me, Anita freely shares all she has learned about illness, healing, fear, "being love," and the true magnificence of each and every human being! This is a book that definitely makes the case that we are spiritual beings having a human experience . . . and that we are all One!
