Owing up to and admitting to having a learning disability as an adult something I have tried to cover up for most of my 45 years is not an admission that I would have considered making until four years ago. It was then that I discovered there was a name for what I live with every day. I learned that it is a disability that affects between four to six percent of the worlds population. It has been recognized for decades by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), but very little is known about the disorder in Australia, the country of my birth. The title of my book, How to yodel standing on your head in a toilet It's as easy as living in a world without numbers, came to me very quickly once I actually began to write my story. But whats a toilet got to do with anything? I hear you ask. There is a very simple answer. In writing a book about a disability it is important to communicate to people how it makes you feel, and the emotions you experience. I could have simply called my book Two and two dont make four or Life simply doesnt add up, but would you really want to read something like that? Neither of these two or the many other alternatives really explains the endless frustrations of dealing with a learning disability or how to develop the strength to overcome it.

A viscount convinced he’s a failure For years, Theodosius Pennington has tried to forget his myriad shortcomings by indulging in wine, women, and witty bonhomie. But now that he’s inherited the title of Viscount Saybrook, it’s time to stop ignoring his responsibilities. Finding the perfect husband for his headstrong younger sister seems a good first step. Until, that is, his sister’s dowry goes missing . . . A lady determined to succeed Harriot Atherton has a secret: it is she, not her steward father, who maintains the Saybrook account books. But Harry’s precarious balancing act begins to totter when the irresponsible new viscount unexpectedly returns to Lincolnshire, the painfully awkward boy of her childhood now a charming yet vulnerable man. Unfortunately, Theo is also claiming financial malfeasance. Can her father’s wandering wits be responsible for the lost funds? Or is she? As unlikely attraction flairs between dutiful Harry and playful Theo, each learns there is far more to the other than devoted daughter and happy-go-lucky lord. But if Harry succeeds at protecting her father, discovering the missing money, and keeping all her secrets, will she be in danger of failing at something equally important—finding love?

What do you call a cult leader who makes you hurt the one who loves you and love the one who hurts you? An Irish mother. And what do you call the devoted children of an Irish mother?Disowned.Ah, but this can't be my mother. My mother is so sweet, so cute, so TINY. Why, she's more like the Little People of her girlhood stories than some ominous Jim Jones figure...Isn't she? While this family history has all the elements of a sad childhood -- alcoholism, neglect, divorce -- the mother is so oddball-amusing, you scarcely notice the devastation of her children, even as they help to destroy their father. Unlike Frank McCourt's claim that there is no childhood more miserable than an poor Irish childhood, this is a chronicle of how true misery is more insidious. For it's when an Irish parent puts down the whiskey, and drags her children into her version of the American dream, that they will pine for the good old days when their mother was just a drunk and their daddy a happy deadbeat. BACKWARDS is a story of loyalty. And betrayal. Set in the innocent fifties and turbulent sixties, this childhood memoir traces an Irish war bride's pursuit of success. And when this poor country girl finally lands wealth and prestige, despite the hindrance of her backward children and their lazy father, surely that's a happy ending.Isn't it?

A powerful new memoir about growing up with a hard father in a hard land Atz Kilcher learned many vital skills while helping his parents carve a homestead out of the Alaskan wilderness: how to work hard, think on his feet, make do, invent, and use what was on hand to accomplish whatever task was in front of him. He also learned how to lie in order to please his often volatile father and put himself in harm’s way to protect his mother and younger, weaker members of the family. Much later in life, as Atz began to reflect on his upbringing, seek to understand his father, and heal his emotional scars, he discovered that the work of pioneering the frontier of the soul is an infinitely more difficult task than any of the back-breaking chores he performed on his family’s homestead. Learning to use new tools—honesty, vulnerability, forgiveness, acceptance—and building upon the good helped him heal and learn to embrace the value of resilience. This revised perspective has enabled him to tell an enhanced and more positive version of the legacy his father created and has him doing the most rewarding work of his life: mapping his own inner wilderness while drawing closer to his adult children, the next stewards of the land he helped his father carve out of the Alaskan frontier.

Stephen Meyer charts the complex vagaries of men reinventing manhood in twentieth century America. Their ideas of masculinity destroyed by principles of mass production, workers created a white-dominated culture that defended its turf against other racial groups and revived a crude, hypersexualized treatment of women that went far beyond the shop floor. At the same time, they recast unionization battles as manly struggles against a system killing their very selves. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, Meyer recreates a social milieu in stunning detail--the mean labor and stolen pleasures, the battles on the street and in the soul, and a masculinity that expressed itself in violence and sexism but also as a wellspring of the fortitude necessary to maintain one's dignity while doing hard work in hard world.
