Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton has been a firefighter for eighteen years. She decides which of her colleagues rush into a burning building and how they confront the blaze. She makes the call to evacuate when she feels the options have been exhausted, even if it means leaving the injured behind. She has managed emergencies that have shocked us and moved us, and made decisions that seem impossible. Her book takes us to the heart of firefighting, and reveals the skills and qualities that are essential to surviving - and even thriving - in such a fast-paced and emotionally-charged environment. It immerses us in this extraordinary world; from scenes of devastation and crisis, through triumphs of bravery, to the quieter moments when these assumed heroes question themselves, their choices, and decisions made in the most unforgiving circumstances. Ultimately, we are asked to step into their boots. In the face of urgency and uncertainty, would you respond in an analytical manner or trust your instincts? How would you decide who lives and who dies?

In the first book of Lauren Barnholdt's captivating The Moment of Truth series, Lyla discovers that trusting her head might be easy but trusting her heart is a whole other matter. Lyla McAfee had all but forgotten the email that she wrote to herself freshman year and scheduled to be delivered right before graduation—the one promising that she'd learn to trust by the end of senior year. But when she receives it the first morning of her senior trip to Florida, her life is sent into a tailspin. Soon she's questioning her seemingly perfect relationship with her boyfriend, Derrick, her attraction to the school player, Beckett, and whether ending her friendship with Aven and Quinn, her former BFFs, was one of the biggest mistakes of her life. Each book in this trilogy is told from the perspective of a different girl—Lyla, Aven, and Quinn—former best friends who, back in freshman year, wrote emails to their future selves about the one thing they hope to accomplish before they graduate. Over the course of the series, each girl will learn about life, love, and the truth about the fight that ended their perfect friendship.

In The Heat of the Day, Elizabeth Bowen brilliantly recreates the tense and dangerous atmosphere of London during the bombing raids of World War II. Many people have fled the city, and those who stayed behind find themselves thrown together in an odd intimacy born of crisis. Stella Rodney is one of those who chose to stay. But for her, the sense of impending catastrophe becomes acutely personal when she discovers that her lover, Robert, is suspected of selling secrets to the enemy, and that the man who is following him wants Stella herself as the price of his silence. Caught between these two men, not sure whom to believe, Stella finds her world crumbling as she learns how little we can truly know of those around us.

Moment Theory is not a new subject; however, in classical treatments, the ill-posedness of the problem is not taken into account - hence this monograph. Assuming a "true" solution to be uniquely determined by a sequence of moments (given as integrals) of which only finitely many are inaccurately given, the authors describe and analyze several regularization methods and derive stability estimates. Mathematically, the task often consists in the reconstruction of an analytic or harmonic function, as is natural from concrete applications discussed (e.g. inverse heat conduction problems, Cauchy's problem for the Laplace equation, gravimetry). The book can be used in a graduate or upper undergraduate course in Inverse Problems, or as supplementary reading for a course on Applied Partial Differential Equations.

Becky Jordan has had it with relationships. From now on her time and dedication won't be lavished on her latest Mr. Wrong-or, worse, Mr. Hell-"No "-just the dream travel job which has unexpectedly leapt into her lap. Finally, life is looking great. Unfortunately, not as great as her sizzling-hot, take-charge new boss. Matt Frobisher is everything she doesn't want him to be, but if anyone thinks she'll risk her career on a workplace fling they can think again. No amount of Superman behaviour from him will make her roll over and play Lois. At least, that's what her head says. Her heart, however, doesn't do logical. In desperation she finds herself a Mr. Distraction, one with no strings and plenty of appeal. But Mr. Distraction also comes with unforeseen complications. Kryptonite complications, like Becky's sister. And when "she" shows up there's only one sure thing: not even Superman can prevent the Disaster Fest that's about to blow Becky's life apart. (Contains one guy determined to win the girl, one girl determined not to be won, and plenty of heat in the middle.)
