Freddie's Last Ride By: Mary Anne Whelan This book is about Freddie Gray, a young black man who died in police custody in Baltimore as a result of a broken neck. Six officers were subsequently tried, but the trials of three were dismissed and the others were found not guilty on various charges. The charges were incorrectly placed by Attorney General of Baltimore City Marilyn Mosby. Mosby relied on the Autopsy Report which, in turn, took its opinion of the timing of Gray's death from the self-invested Baltimore Police. It didn't happen in the van: the arresting officers broke his neck. The media perpetuated Mosby's misreading of the report which confused Opinion with formal, medical, forensic evidence, thereby reinforcing both the misplaced charges and public misunderstanding, and facilitating the consequent injustice that set Baltimore on fire. This book takes apart the process and testimony of the trial from an informed medical point of view. It critiques the prosecution, the autopsy report, and the testimony of the expert witnesses. It reviews the important medical concepts necessary to evaluating what happened, and the medical ethics which should (but did not) prevail in such cases. This book should be of broad interest: to those concerned with the processes of racial injustice in America generally; to those concerned with medico-legal ethics; to medical and legal educators and their students. The message is both topical and enduring, and the book is unique because of its authoritative medical perspective. The author wants readers to take away an appropriate understanding not only of what happened in this case, but of the necessary changes in the approach to such situations. And I want them to understand that this is not just a problem for the Black community, but for all of us.

Chester’s Last Ride by Nathan Wright Nathan Wright has written a stirring adventure story in the best tradition of the western novel. It relates the difficult journey of Zeke Conley from Kentucky and his half-wolf dog, Big Ben, as they wander the frontiers for treasure and excitement. At last, Conley and his ever-faithful companion return home to help his family fight off swindlers and desperadoes. Here, there is rousing action enough to satisfy any reader, but it is in its depiction of the hardships and rewards of life in nature that Chester’s Last Ride rises to true inspiration as it conveys the feel of such details as the refuge of a campfire on a freezing night under the barren sky or the comradeship of a fellow’s horse and his big dog.

Based on a True StoryWinnipeg Free Press, Monday, September 24, 1984, Page 4 – A collision between two dirt bikes Friday night has resulted in the death of a 14year old youth from Landmark. RCMP said Brian Mark Kauenhofen was killed when he rear-ended a second bike driven by another youth and a female passenger. The other two riders escaped with minor injuries. In Brian's Last Ride the author brings the reader to the scene of an unintentional hit-and-run; then walks them through the aftermath.

Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood writes : "The annals of Central Australian exploration are tragic and heroic, but it is long indeed since I read a more moving story of endurance and heroism in the face of terrific odds than the epic which Mr. Ion Idriess has woven out of the last few months of the life of L. H. B. Lasseter." The reader will agree with this, and wonder why he has not heard of Mr. Idriess before. He is well known in Australia, but this is his first book to be published in England. It will not be his last, if the present one meets with the success it deserves. Having himself been a prospector, the story he has constructed out of the fragments of documentary evidence - a few reports, the barely legible diary and letters found buried near Lasseter's last camps - is probably very close to what actually happened. Harry Lasseter had once discovered a rich gold reef in unexplored west Central Australia. Owing to a faulty watch, the bearings he took were useless. An expedition was fitted out to locate it. From the first, misfortune dogged the steps of the party. Food ran short and they returned to the base-camp - all except Lasseter, who went on alone. When his two camels bolted he was left waterless in the desert. Blinded by sand and tortured by dysentry, he found the reef, but died shortly afterwards, deserted by a tribe of aborigines with whom he had tried to make friends. Mr. Idriess tells this story in a simple, virile style which is, in its intense economy, comparable to Hemingway at his best.
