Organoselenium shows incredible promise in medicine, particularly cancer therapy. This book discusses organoselenium chemistry and biology in the context of its therapeutic potential, taking the reader through synthetic techniques, bioactivity and therapeutic applications. Divided into three sections, the first section describes synthetic advances in bioactive selenium compounds, revealing how organoselenium compound toxicity, redox properties and specificity can be further tuned. The second section explains the biophysics and biochemistry of organoselenium compounds, as well as selenoproteins. The final section closes with several chapters devoted to therapeutic and medicinal applications of organoselenium compounds, covering radioprotectors, anticancer agents and antioxidant behaviour. With contributions from leading global experts, this book covers recent advances in the field and is an ideal reference for those researching organoselenium compounds.

In July, 1988, more than 300 scientists from 29 different countries gathered at Tiibingen, W. Germany, in order to spend 4 days discussing their favourite trace element, selenium. This meeting continued the good tradition of three previous meetings held in Corvallis/Oregon, 1976, in Lubbock/Texas, 1980, and in Beijing/China, in 1984. Incidentally, the University of Tiibingen provided a unique historical background for a Symposium devoted to recent advances in biochemistry, pharmacology, human nutrition and human health; here, the first independent depart ment of Physiological Chemistry in Germany was founded in 1845. Pro fessor H9Ppe-Seyler elucidated here the hemin structure and his student Friedrich Miescher discovered the nucleic acids. This book contains one-half of the oral or poster presentations which were selected before the meeting was held on the basis of a one page abstract. It is the reader who will have to decide whether this time consuming policy of quality assessment was warranted or not.

The book gives an account of the most recent development in the understanding of the essential trace element selenium with respect to its role in animals and man. It is divided into five sections covering biochemistry, metabolism, pharmacology, human nutrition and epidemiology, and the interaction of selenium with malignant diseases. Primary new information is available on the synthesis of selenoproteins, metabolic selenium-dependent modulations in animals, and brand-new results on the development of a new, selenium-containing anti-inflammatory drug. For the first time, data from China are presented on the chronic toxicity of selenium in man. A critical appraisal of the debate on the anticarcinogenic effect of selenium is given. Recommended daily intakes of selenium for man and epidemiological data on different countries of the world are reported.

Organochalcogen compounds reviews the state of the art in new green protocols involving organochalcogen compounds (Se, S, and Te), including the use of nonconventional reaction media, alternative solvents, and solvent-free protocols to prepare these important compounds. Bringing together several leading researchers in organochalcogen chemistry, it provides an authoritative overview of the current state of the field and compiles recent advances in methodologies for the application of green chemistry principles in compound development. These include the use of organochalcogen compounds as intermediates, catalysts, or target products across a range of applications. The recent developments outlined in in the book reflect the efforts of the researchers in this area to move toward a more sustainable chemistry, giving the book the dual benefit of highlighting the latest developments in the field while also showing how the principles of green chemistry can effectively be included in active research projects. Thus it is a valuable reference for chemists, particularly those working in organic, green, and synthetic chemistry across both academia and industry. Highlights green synthetic methods with potential application in the synthesis of natural compounds or other biologically active scaffolds Explores the chemical modification of natural compounds by insertion of organochalcogen groups for the preparation of boosted bioactive semisynthetic molecules Discuss how redox catalysis and catalysis in flow conditions using eco-friendly oxidant can provide new opportunities for the synthesis of linear ad cyclic derivatives

Up until a few decades ago, chalcogen chemistry was mainly represented by the chemistry of sulfur-containing compounds. However, with the rise in research around selenium and tellurium compound chemistry, the field has developed significantly as it continues to uncover and understand the peculiarities chalcogens exhibit. Taking an introductory approach, this book is the foundation to the subject that has been long needed. Covering organic and inorganic synthesis, structural properties, coordination chemistry and computational modelling, all key classes of chalcogen compounds are illustrated. Applications across materials science, biology, pharmaceutical science and environmental topics highlight to readers the impact of chalcogen chemistry in many aspects of research. Edited by international leaders in the field, Chalcogen Chemistry brings together contributions from acclaimed researchers around the world. This book is ideal for newcomers and established researchers, and provides the first building block to uncovering this fascinating field.
