Building Sustainable Futures for Adult Learners is an edited and refereed collection of papers published in conjunction with the joint Adult Higher Educational Alliance (AHEA) and American Association of Adult and Continuing Education Conferences (AAACE). This book is the third in a series of scholarly publications associated with the annual AHEA conference. The book is arranged thematically according to the topics of submissions. Building Sustainable Futures is important because it fills a unique niche in the field of adult education, extends the scope of AHEA to a larger audience, and offers a current volume for scholars and practitioners based on both research and practice-based research.

This is an open access book. AsiaTEFL - TEFLIN - iNELTAL Conference 2022 invites presentations of research and classroom-based articles, symposia and posters as well as conceptual ideas and best practices relevant to the topics of English language and its variety of aspects. Proposal submissions should be no longer than 250-word abstract and 60-word biodata, sent via our abstract proposal submission platform at the conference management system. The platform will require information of: first/given name, last/sur/family name, nationality, affiliation, title, and status of presenter (first, co-presenter, etc.). Notification of acceptance will be emailed on April 8th, 2022.

In the words of Aldous Huxley, "Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant and interesting." Few people question the value of reading; in fact, most extol its virtues. As our culture becomes more complex, reading plays an increasingly greater role in satisfying personal needs and in promoting social awareness and growth. In the last 20 years, the teaching of this invaluable skill has focused so intensely on comprehension and prediction from context that it has lost sight of the significance of automaticity and fluency in the word-identification process. Reading is a synthesis of word recognition and comprehension; thus, this text is about these basic processes and their integration. A common plea from teachers today is that research and psychology be translated into teaching behavior. Therefore, the aim of this book is twofold: one, to identify, report, organize, and discuss those bits of data, research and theory that are most relevant to the teacher's understanding of the reading process; and two, to help educators to interpret and apply theory and research data to everyday classroom teaching, as well as to the problems encountered frequently in developmental and remedial teaching.

This book investigates the issue of cloze-validity as a measure of second language reading comprehension. It starts off by making a distinction between general reading ability and the more specific reading comprehension followed by a thorough review of the related research on L2 reading comprehension and sorting out the confusion in the literature in this categorization. A comprehensive account of cloze procedure is presented discussing its origin, different versions, its use for teaching and testing purposes, as well the latest research on cloze as measures of readability, language proficiency and second language reading. The book includes studies conducted at several stages on validating cloze as a measure of reading and interview and questionnaire techniques are applied to investigate the validity of eight cloze tests, criterion reading tests, and other cloze and reading tests in general. Two new cloze tests, i.e. reader-centered cloze test and phrase cloze test, are also introduced and researched as measures of reading ability. The book concludes with suggestions for developing tests that can better measure reading comprehension in light of recent research insights on the complex and dynamic nature of reading.
