"It appears, unfortunately, that our own Federal Government may be part of the problem. HUD, Housing and Urban Development, is holding a large number of single-family homes in an area. Failure to properly dispose of this inventory may be contributing to this problem. And in many cases, it appears that FHA is insuring loans that should have never been made, because of their way of doing business and also by the way they set themselves up to be gamed. As a Senator responsible for FHA's budget, I am responsible about the financial impact on the FHA insurance fund"--Page 3

When a client begs me to find the prize-winning Maltese show dog stolen from her back yard, I suspect I may be channeling Ace Ventura: Pet Detective rather than my hero, Humphrey Bogart. It sounds like a simple case, but when a ransom drop goes awry, and more valuable dogs go missing, I find myself entangled in the competitive world of dog shows. Before I know it, things take a dangerous turn. I become the hunted and discover man's best friend can attract some decidedly unfriendly characters.

It's 1949, and Denver private investigator Dewey Webb isn't thinking about murder, he's pondering the stack of bills he can't pay. Then he runs into an old army acquaintance, Roy Jefferson, who is well-dressed, flashing cash, and wanting Dewey's help. Dewey has his suspicions, however, Roy pays him substantially just to meet him later and hear his problem. Dewey agrees, but before they can talk, Roy dies, an apparent suicide. But is that the case? Since Dewey has taken Roy's money, he feels honor-bound to look into Roy's death. What Dewey discovers leads him to believe someone from Roy's sordid past may have murdered him. And that same someone may now be after Dewey as well. As Dewey works to find a possible killer, he's forced to question many things, including his own sense of honor. A hard-boiled, historical mystery that's great for fans who love a traditional detective crime story with a noir flavor, but without a lot of sex or swearing. “This superbly succinct and incisive book couldn’t be more timely or urgent.” —Michael Sorkin, author of All Over the Map Our cities are changing. Around the world, more and more money is being invested in buildings and land. Real estate is now a $217 trillion dollar industry, worth thirty-six times the value of all the gold ever mined. It forms sixty percent of global assets, and one of the most powerful people in the world—the president of the United States—made his name as a landlord and developer. Samuel Stein shows that this explosive transformation of urban life and politics has been driven not only by the tastes of wealthy newcomers, but by the state-driven process of urban planning. Planning agencies provide a unique window into the ways the state uses and is used by capital, and the means by which urban renovations are translated into rising real estate values and rising rents. Capital City explains the role of planners in the real estate state, as well as the remarkable power of planning to reclaim urban life.

This book gives the reader a look at the complicated U.S. health care system through the eyes of a consumer. It explores two key questions: Why, with all of the resources that have been devoted to solving the health care crisis, does the situation continue to deteriorate? And, what, exactly, could be done differently this time to turn the situation around? The author examines obstacles that have stood in the way of health care reform in the past - including politics, government red tape, profit-driven providers, moneyed lobbyists and special interest groups and even, our own consumer "entitlement mentality" - and challenges the reader to envision a scenario in which innovation in health care might be possible. The author argues that consumers are the key to forward progress on health care: we'll only see consumer-driven solutions when enough people demand them. This book is a challenge to consumers to speak up and hold our leaders in the medical community, the government and corporate America accountable for developing solutions that work for us. Susan M. Finley is a small business owner and marketing strategist. She began her career as a bank product manager, and in 1994 co-founded Michaelson Kelbick Partners Inc. (MKP), a firm specializing in marketing and communications for the financial services industry. Over the course of a decade, the agency managed marketing communications for some of the largest bank mergers in recent history. In 2003, she left MKP (now renamed mkp communications, inc.). Her knowledge and understanding of the complicated U.S. health care financing system comes from a three-year research and consulting project, started in the hopes of serving as a catalyst for consumer-driven changes in health care. She lives in North Carolina, where she and her husband have recently founded Finley and Finley, LLC, to continue their research on potential avenues for innovation in the health care and financial services industries.
