The Charcoal Burner S Legacy

John Levorson Goplerud founded the Goplerud family. He lived in central Norway from 1724 to 1801 and he made charcoal for the early iron industry. Thus he and all his descendants are known as the "Charcoal Burner Family." He had 6 children who took the names: Goplerud, Aspholt, Lindelien, Lundo (Lundene), Landsen, and Stugaarden. Those are the 6 "branches" in this book. There have been more than 100,000 descendants of this family. Descendants came to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Dakota in the mid-1800's. Over 10,500 are listed in this book, more than half distributed widely in the U.S.A. with large numbers also in Norway (especially Valdres, Ringerike, Hallingdal and Oslo). Includes ancestors to the 1400's (with conjecture to 65 B.C.) together with family and locality history.

Jack Bitner researched the history of Mt. Gretna from the time the area was used for wood to make charcoal for the Cornwall Iron Furnace a few miles away to the development of the area as the town of Mt. Gretna with its amusement park, the home of the PA National Guard from 1885 to 1935 to the founding of the PA Chautauqua and the settlement of The Brethren in Christ Campmeeting, both in 1892. This book was written and published in 1992 to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the PA Chautauqua & the Campmeeting. This is a colorful story about Robert Habersham Coleman, owner of the land, developing this community until his financial reversals in 1893 and the struggles to provide the unique community it is today.

Exploits such as the famous low-level raid by 617 Squadron on Germanys hydro electric dams on the night of 16/17 May 1943, the nightly raids on Germany and the sinking of the Tirpitz in 1945 are all without equal.At the 50th anniversary of the raid in 1993 more than 70,000 people thronged Derwent Water to watch the BBMF Lancaster roar over the same dam that 617 practiced on shortly before the raid on 16/17 May 1943. As we approach the 70th Anniversary of the raid, such scenes will no doubt play out once again. It seems timely therefore that such a history should be recorded, charting the course of the Lancasters career in the skies and the legacy it continues to provide for new generations of aviation enthusiasts and pilots.The text is supplemented throughout by an exciting selection of black and white images that work to evoke a real sense of the scale and majesty of this iconic aircraft.
