Robert Attenello pays tribute to his amazing wife, Lillian, in Her Journey through My Eyes. At first blush, they may have seemed like an odd pair: She was a real estate and immigration paralegal and he was a construction worker with rough edges. But opposites attract—and they were perfect together. They had lots of fun and enjoyed lots of romance, but their story took a tragic turn when Lillian was diagnosed with breast cancer. The doctors planned to perform a double mastectomy and remove the cluster of lymph nodes affected by the cancer. But further scans revealed bad news: Lillian’s cancer had spread to her bones. Doctors, however, were still hopeful that the cancer could be treated. Lillian put on her warrior face and steeled herself for what was to come. Some days, she barely had the strength to get out of bed or her recliner. But she always fought through those awfully long and difficult days. Join the author as he recounts the highs and lows of his time with his loving wife of twenty-three years and the three years of support, trials, and unwavering faith during her battle with breast cancer. Whether you’ve been diagnosed with cancer or have a loved one affected by the disease, you’ll be inspired by Lillian’s courage in Her Journey through My Eyes.

Amina lives on the edges of Mogadishu. Her family's house has been damaged in Somalia's long civil war, but they continue to live there, reluctant to leave their home. Amina's world is shattered when government forces come to arrest her father because his art has been officially censored, deemed too political. Then rebel forces kidnap Amina's brother, forcing him to become a soldier in Somalia's brutal ongoing war. Although her mother and grandmother are still with her, Amina feels vulnerable and abandoned. Secretly, she begins to create her own artwork in the streets and the derelict buildings to give herself a sense of hope and to let out the burden of her heart. Her artwork explodes into Mogadishu's underground world, providing a voice for people all over the city who hope for a better, more secure future. 'This touching story brings home vividly the dangers of creating art that seeks to be true - and all the more so during a vicious civil war, interwoven with religious extremism. Thankfully, Amina's teenage curiosity and courage also signal hope.' - Beverley Naidoo, author of Carnegie Medal Winner The Other Side of Truth

The things one child saw, others did not. Twelve-year-old Malina, a shy timid child seemed to always be afraid. The sound of his voice would send her into a frenzy. How could such an incredibly handsome man be such a terror of a human being? The fear of a gangster father, the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, her mother. A mother with such rare beauty, she should have been a movie star, a celebrity, a model, anything but his wife. Startled, I heard my mom in her room crying, such a sad, distant cry, then like the exploding of a bomb, I heard him thrust her to the floor. My my eyes were wide open now, I saw him on top of her. He had her pinned to the floor with his body straddling hers. She was struggling and squirming, trying to get free from his grasp, which was completely impossible for her to do. His fingers wrapped around her throat, at the same time smashing the butt of a pistol into her face, all while choking her. He beat her till he himself passed out from his drunken stupor. For a second I thought they were both dead. Mom struggled to lift herself from the floor, blood all over her face and body. Quietly she tiptoed past him. I don't know why she didn't pick up that gun and kill him? Just blow his fucking head off for what he had just done to her. It would have been justified. One look at her face anyone could tell she has just been beat by a fucking madman.
