These WHO guidelines are designed to assist staff of closed settings to provide safe and effective withdrawal management and treatment services for people who use drugs in the Western Pacific Region. It provides information about drugs and drug dependence; the management of drug withdrawal; and approaches to treatment for drug dependence. For the purposes of this document, "closed settings" refers to prisons, work camps, compulsory drug treatment centers and any other institution in which people are detained. The Guidelines take a public health approach to drug use and dependence. This approach recognizes that the health of one individual affects the health of the community.

In UK society, there are cultural norms and assumptions that affect many marginalised groups and this book aims to address and challenge these through the lens of the people who have lived these experiences. Social Exclusion in the UK presents a range of lived experiences alongside a critical commentary on the impact of social stigma, exclusion and marginalisation on people's lives. This book's chapters are co-authored by people with lived experience and academics and are all underpinned by the Transformative Learning Theory developed by scholar Mezirow. The marginalised experiences discussed in this book include different types of substance users, care leavers, asylum seekers, offenders, HIV positive, those living in poverty or those who identify as transgender. What makes this book unique is that it gives a voice to those who have been the most affected by inequality - whether it's economic or social and health inequalities. Those affected are the least likely to be involved in shaping and informing responses to it and this lack of involvement risks the further exclusion of those who are already marginalised. A few of the ways this book aims to challenge this include: legitimising and prioritising lived experience expertise; fostering critical reflection of our own beliefs and assumptions and drawing on lived experience expertise to inform responses and solutions.

The guideline focuses specifically on evidence-based pharmacological treatments for AUD in outpatient settings and includes additional information on assessment and treatment planning, which are an integral part of using pharmacotherapy to treat AUD.

The aim of the American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline series is to improve patient care. Guidelines provide a comprehensive synthesis of all available information relevant to the clinical topic. Practice guidelines can be vehicles for educating psychiatrists, other medical and mental health professionals, and the general public about appropriate and inappropriate treatments. The series also will identify those areas in which critical information is lacking and in which research could be expected to improve clinical decisions. The Practice Guidelines are also designed to help those charged with overseeing the utilization and reimbursement of psychiatric services to develop more scientifically based and clinically sensitive criteria.

The Australian Guidelines for the Treatment of Alcohol Problems have been periodically developed over the past 25 years. In 1993, the first version of these guidelines, titled: ‘An outline for the management of alcohol problems: Quality assurance in the treatment of drug dependence project’ was published (Mattick & Jarvis 1993). The Australian Government commissioned an update a decade later (Shand et al. 2003) and a further edition in 2009 to integrate the Guidelines with the Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol (National Health and Medical Research Council, NHMRC 2009; Haber et al., 2009). The present version of the Guidelines was also commissioned by the Commonwealth of Australia to remain current and integrated with the updated NHMRC consumption guidelines (2020). In order to ensure that guidelines remain relevant, the next set of guidelines should be updated in 2025, consistent with NHMRC recommendation that guidelines be updated every five years. These guidelines aim to provide up-to-date, evidence-based information to clinicians on available treatments for people with alcohol problems and are largely directed towards individual clinicians in practice, such as primary care physicians (general practitioners, nursing staff), specialist medical practitioners, psychologists and other counsellors, and other health professionals. Some chapters highlight service or system level issues that impact on clinicians and their patients. These include recommendations concerning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, stigma, and discrimination. Elsewhere, organisation capacity is implied, such as medical resources for withdrawal management where recommendations indicate use of medications. As all forms of treatment will not be readily available or suitable for all populations or settings, these guidelines may require interpretation and adaptation.

During the last few centuries, and particularly in recent decades, problems result ing from the excessive use of drugs and alcohol have spread virtually as an epidemic to every country in the world and to almost every community. Abuse of alcohol and drugs is related to numerous other health problems, such as the spread of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) on all continents. Health and social services today cannot afford to ignore this crisis since it affects all levels of society and manifests itself in diverse health and social problems. In recent years, the World Health Organization has received numerous requests for training material for physicians in this field. This manual therefore meets an urgent need. The availability of new data and the dearth of suitable textbooks have made its preparation mandatory. The influence of sociocultural factors on drug dependence and alcohol related problems-on their cause, development, and consequences as well as on their treatment and prevention-has been taken into account in the preparation of this manual in order to ensure that its usefulness is not limited to one country or region. It has been prepared primarily for the teaching of physicians and medical students, although much of it is relevant to the training of nurses, midwives, health educators, primary-care workers, medical social workers, counselors, and psychologists. In fact, suggestions have been included for adapting the manual for use in the training of such varied groups of students.

The Federal Guidelines for Opioid Treatment Programs (Guidelines) describe the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) expectation of how the federal opioid treatment standards found in Title 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 8 (42 CFR � 8) are to be satisfied by opioid treatment programs (OTPs). Under these federal regulations, OTPs are required to have current valid accreditation status, SAMHSA certification, and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration before they are able to administer or dispense opioid drugs for the treatment of opioid addiction.
