National Bestseller Essential lessons in hospitality for every business, from the former co-owner of legendary restaurant Eleven Madison Park. Will Guidara was twenty-six when he took the helm of Eleven Madison Park, a struggling two-star brasserie that had never quite lived up to its majestic room. Eleven years later, EMP was named the best restaurant in the world. How did Guidara pull off this unprecedented transformation? Radical reinvention, a true partnership between the kitchen and the dining room—and memorable, over-the-top, bespoke hospitality. Guidara’s team surprised a family who had never seen snow with a magical sledding trip to Central Park after their dinner; they filled a private dining room with sand, complete with mai-tais and beach chairs, to console a couple with a cancelled vacation. And his hospitality extended beyond those dining at the restaurant to his own team, who learned to deliver praise and criticism with intention; why the answer to some of the most pernicious business dilemmas is to give more—not less; and the magic that can happen when a busser starts thinking like an owner. Today, every business can choose to be a hospitality business—and we can all transform ordinary transactions into extraordinary experiences. Featuring sparkling stories of his journey through restaurants, with the industry’s most famous players like Daniel Boulud and Danny Meyer, Guidara urges us all to find the magic in what we do—for ourselves, the people we work with, and the people we serve.

Unreasonable Hospitality By Will Guidara Will Guidara had the opportunity to participate in a course called "Guest Chefs" while attending Cornell College. Every semester, a renowned chef would visit to prepare a dinner that the students in the course would independently manage. Guidara's team had the privilege of working with the famous chef Daniel Boulud. The dinner was successful, and they celebrated with a small party afterward. Guidara's experience with Boulud left a lasting impact, including a memory of Boulud making scrambled eggs for intoxicated college students. However, tragedy struck when Guidara's mother passed away after a long battle with brain cancer. While he had plans to work in a kitchen in Spain, he was hesitant to rely solely on his father for financial support. Despite this, his father encouraged him to fulfill his commitment. Guidara later reached out to Boulud, requesting a special reservation for his father. Boulud generously provided a free meal in a reserved room, allowing Guidara and his father to share a special dinner together. Guidara and his father found solace in the warm hospitality provided by Boulud and his team during their time of grief. The experience helped them overcome their sadness and brought comfort during a difficult period. From this, Guidara learned the value of using one's skills to positively impact the lives of others.

Why would any sane person pass up the financial opportunity of a lifetime? Raising the Bar tells the amazing story of Clif Bar's Gary Erickson and shows that some things are more important than money. Gary Erickson and coauthor Lois Lorentzen tell the unusual and inspiring story about following your passion, the freedom to create, sustaining a business over the long haul, and living responsibly in your community and on the earth. Raising the Bar chronicles Clif Bar's ascent from a homemade energy bar to a $100 million phenomenon with an estimated 35 million consumers, and a company hailed by Inc. magazine as one of the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. four years in a row. The book is filled with compelling personal stories from Erickson's life-trekking in the Himalayan mountains, riding his bicycle over roadless European mountain passes, climbing in the Sierra Nevada range--as inspiration for his philosophy of business. Throughout the book, Erickson--a competitive cyclist, jazz musician, world traveler, mountain climber, wilderness guide, and entrepreneur--convinces us that sustaining one's employees, community, and environment is good business. If you are a manager, executive, business owner, or board member, Raising the Bar is your personal guide to corporate integrity.
