This is the first intermediate-student edition of a selection from Virgil's Aeneid XI. Lines 1–224, 498–521, 532–596, 648–689 and 725–835 are included as Latin text with an accompanying commentary and vocabulary. Focusing on a deliberately concise extract from the original, this edition is designed to be manageable for students reading the text for the first time while also perfectly encapsulating the interest of the longer work and inspiring further study of it. A detailed introduction explains points of historical and stylistic interest, encompassing the whole of Book XI, including sections omitted here from the Latin. In Book XI Pallas, the warrior son of Evander who was killed by Turnus, is buried, amid the mourning of his father and the Trojans. After a truce to collect and bury the dead on both sides, fighting resumes, during which the warrior-maiden Camilla battles bravely for the Latins before being killed. The events of the book take up just four days: Pallas' funeral occupies the first; the second and third are devoted (briefly) to the truce and burials; the fourth, taking up the second half of the book, is concerned with Camilla's aristeia, in which she is likened to an Amazon.

Aeneas appears in The Illiad in vague snatches and starts as a traveling warrior of great piety who was loosely connected to the foundation of Rome. Virgil weaves these fragments into a powerful myth about the founding of Rome in The Aeneid. Aeneas travels from his native Troy to Italy then wages victorious war upon the Latins.

This is the first comprehensive commentary on Aeneid 11. The commentary treats fully matters of linguistic and textual interpretation, metre and prosody, grammar, lexicon and idiom, of Roman behaviour, social and ritual, as well as Virgil’s sources and the literary tradition. New critical approaches and developments in Virgilian studies have been taken into account with economy and fairness. The Latin text is presented with a facing English translation. The commentary is followed by an appendix on Penthesilea and the Epic Cycle and a second appendix which discusses the weaknesses of Aeneid 11. The book concludes with English and Latin indices. This book contains the complete text of Aeneid XI, together with a rendering into Latin prose and a running summary of the whole in English. Its main intended audience is A-Level Latin students in England. Aeneid XI is one of the set texts by the OCR Board for 2020 and 2021. A larger and less easily defined audience is anyone, in any time or place, who wants to read Vergil, but whose Latin is not ready for the challenge. I have reordered the words in a more obvious sequence. I have replaced many words with more natural alternatives. I have supplied pronouns and verbs and prepositions that could not be fitted into the metrical structure. I have broken up the paragraphs, and formatted the whole as if it were a novel. The advantage is that the result is still Latin. It is Latin that most A-Level students will be able to read without too much looking in a dictionary - and not too much head-scratching thereafter. Unlike any English version, it is obviously related to the original, and is a fair key to understanding the original. It also gives students a piece of Latin that they can read at length, and that will be good practice for the unseen translation.
