The friendship between Grant Thorson and Will Campbell is the only sure thing in Grant's life as he suffers a series of painful losses. But when Will dies, Grant decides that loving someone makes him too vulnerable, so he pushes Susan and his daughter away to keep from being hurt again.

Based on a real-life revelational experience that is described in the substantial “Afterword” section, The White Horse teaches that one should not judge another by superficial characteristics. In a rural setting whose exact time and setting are purposely undefined, a family of four young children and their parents rejects a horse because of his skin color. The horse initially resigns himself to his outcast status, but when the children find themselves in danger, he emerges as a confident rescuer. The horse’s heroic act proves to the family, and to the horse, himself, that their preconceived prejudices about him were, for many reasons, entirely wrong.

The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by G. K. Chesterton about the idealized exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great. Written in ballad form, the work is usually considered one of the last great traditional epic poems ever written in the English language. The poem narrates how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun under the auspices of God working through the agency of the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a narration of Alfred's military and political accomplishments, it is also considered a Catholic allegory.
