Excerpt from Annual Report for the Year Ended March 31, 1989 Ontario experienced one of its worst forest fire seasons on record in 1988. The aviation and fire staff began preparations early in the season, spurred on by two years of less than average winter snowfalls combined with early dry, warm springs. The first major fire of the season broke out on April 29 in the Kenora District. By the end of the season, Ontario had recorded fires - the second highest number of fires on record, exceeded only by the recorded in 1976. More than of these fires were started by lightning, an unusually high number. Effective initial attack held the loss to hectares, of which more than burned in the more remote parts of northern Ontario. Excerpt from Annual Report, Farm Credit Administration, 1989 There are now reasons for cautious optimism with respect to the condition of the Farm Credit System. Its institutions reported combined earnings of $605 million for 1989, and a significant improvement in loan quality was evident. Marked declines were noted in nonaccrual and high risk loans, as well as in acquired properties. The level of these assets, however, remains relatively high and poses a degree of risk. Improved farm income and collateral values have facilitated the efforts of system institutions in working out troubled loans. New research vessels are being acquired for support of the Protein Expression Laboratory and data acquisition and control systems, similar to the ones that have been in use for several years with the 5 and 10 liter research systems. We are upgrading existing programs to incorporate real-time calculation of growth parameters, to supply additional con trols, and to record data from instruments new ly added to the system. The Section is continuing to improve and expand the computer-based eye-tracking system built for the National Institute of Mental Health (nimh). In addition to the initial purpose of testing schizophrenics, and more recently the family members of schizophrenics, the system is being used to study the effects of aids on the ability to track moving targets. There are now two labs in the nimh that are using these systems, as well as St. Elizabeths Hospital. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
