2016 Regional Trends Report

The 2016 Regional Trends Report on Energy for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific supports the implementation of the SDG7 and outcomes of the Asian and Pacific Energy Forum 2013.

This publication presents a range of social protection programmes in the Near East and North Africa region, including government-led social assistance, food subsidies, contributory social security and insurance schemes, and systems based on religious and cultural traditions.

The Near East and North Africa (NENA) has always been affected and in many ways shaped by the high levels of human mobility. However, rural migration - or migration to, from and between rural areas - is often overlooked, despite its important ramifications for food security, agriculture, rural development and regional disparities. In the next decade, persistent poverty, climatic threats and increasing competition for natural resources may fuel greater levels of migration across NENA countries. This report was designed to provide policy makers, practitioners and development partners with an overview of the main challenges and opportunities of rural migration in the NENA region.

This publication highlights major trends in the nature of humanitarian crises, their underlying causes and drivers, and the actors that participate in prevention, response and recovery. Beyond providing statistics, the report uses infographics to display trend analyses that show how the humanitarian landscape is evolving and how the humanitarian system can be more effective. Data in the report come from a variety of sources and partners. The report provides an overview of the humanitarian landscape in terms of funding, capacity, crises and appeals; a 'regional perspectives' section and 'trends, challenges and opportunities' section, which provides a case study on issues that impact humanitarian operations. Highlights for 2017 include new case studies on explosive weapons, humanitarian and development financing in protracted crises, and sexual and reproductive health in emergencies.

Access to power and electricity is a vital resource for businesses and for sustaining the livelihood of consumers. This monograph presents the experience in the implementation of smart specialization strategies (S3) from multilevel policy governance, as well as from the bottom-up perspectives of firms, clusters, and networks in selected European countries. The presented research focuses on relevance and feasibility of the S3 adoption, emphasizing the importance of linking policy considerations with partnerships at lower governance levels. The major contribution of the presented research rests in theoretical implications and practical recommendations relevant for the implementation of regional S3 in the European context, with the possibility of place-based adoption in other environments. The book is also valuable for synthesizing the most recent advancements in smart specialization as a policy concept and the concept of transformation and growth for territorial units and economic entities. This book aims to further diffuse and expand the academic community’s learning of the new S3 approach in Europe and beyond. This is the first volume on the subject of the alleviation of world suffering. At the same time it is also the first book framing the fields of global socio-economic development, world health, human rights, peace studies, sustainability, and poverty within the challenge of alleviating suffering and improving quality of life. Both international studies and global development have become specialized and fragmented, whereas this work assembles all of these development fragments together in order to determine whether common ground exists to make headway in reducing global suffering.
