A Brief History of the English Language and Literature, Vol. 2 By John Miller Meiklejohn 1. Tongue, Speech, Language.-We speak of the "English tongue" or of the "French language"; and we say of two nations that they "do not understand each other's speech." The existence of these three words-speech, tongue, language-proves to us that a language is something spoken, -that it is a number of sounds; and that the writing or printing of it upon paper is a quite secondary matter. Language, rightly considered, then, is an organised set of sounds. These sounds convey a meaning from the mind of the speaker to the mind of the hearer, and thus serve to connect man with man. Excerpt from Brief History of the English Language Literature: For the Use of Schools The three first periods scarcely belong to a history of English literature, and consequently only a brief account of them is given in the present chapter. The real history of English literature begins with Chaucer, in the brilliant reign of Edward III. Yet, even this great poet and the other prominent writers of the Middle English period (1350 - 1550) are but of an in ferier value for our purpose, since the pupil cannot thoroughly unterstand their works without a special study of the language in which they are written. So we can limit ourselves to a rapid sketch of the next period. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. To this are added, in various places, the historical reasons for present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Brief History of the English Language In Part V some advantageous changes in order have been made. The most noticeable Of these is in treating the weak verbs before the strong. This order, while not adopted in the larger work, is quite in accord with the plan of both; namely, to give prominence to those elements of the lan guage which have been most stable and most important. The weak verbs were not only more numerous than the strong in the oldest period, but have increased in number and influence at the expense of the latter. Besides, the present arrangement not only emphasizes the more regular weak class, but also brings together all the less regular classes, an advantage in itself. Excerpt from A Short History of Modern English Literature The great pressure upon space has been relieved by dividing the history of English literature into two por tions. If this series continues to receive the support of the public, it is hoped that a volume on the archaic section may bring the story down from the earliest times to Robert of Brunne and Laurence Minot. In my first three chapters I have further lightened my labour by leaving out of consideration what was written in this country in Latin or French, for, although this may be material in dealing with thought in England, it can have but a small connection with the history of expression in the English language. I make no apology for the prominence given throughout to the art of poetry, for it is in verse that style can most definitely and to greatest advantage be studied, especially in a literature like ours, where prose has mainly been written without any other aim than the naive transference of ideas or statement of facts, like the prose of M. Jourdain, while our national poetry, which is one of our main national glories, has been a consecutive chain of consciously elaborated masterpieces.
