Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for the Use of Schools Of the hundreds of changes which have here been in the text of the English edition, some are accounted what has just been said a few by the fact that Ology of Tischer's German edition, published under direction of Madvig himself, has been preferred to that the original work and others still have been made beca Madvig has used new forms of expression in the edit issued by himself, to take the place of Tischer's, in the ye 1867. Excerpt from A Latin Grammar The present book is a revision of my Latin Grammar originally published in 1895. Wherever greater accuracy or precision of statement seemed possible, I have endeavored to secure this. The rules for syllable division have been changed and made to conform to the prevailing practice of the Romans themselves. In the Perfect Subjunctive Active, the endings z's, imam, -z'zz's are now marked long. The theory of vowel length before the suffixes -gnus, -gna, -gnum, and also before j, has been discarded. In the Syntax I have recognized a special category of Ablative of Association, and have abandoned the original doctrine as to the force of tenses in the Prohibitive. Excerpt from The Public School Latin Grammar for the Use of Schools, Colleges, and Private Students Competent and candid critics are aware that a book of this size, in spite of its title, is not meant for school use in the same sense as the Primer and other lesson-books of a similar kind. As a school-book (for there is no limit to its use by any students who are capable of good private reading) masters can use it in two ways (r) by enforcing general or occasional reference to its principles and rules in reading Latin authors (2) by requiring definite portions to be prepared for periodical examinations conducted on paper as well as orally. Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for Schools and Colleges Tnn last quarter of a century has revealed many im portant facts in the development of language. During this period philological research has thrown new light upon Latin forms and inflections, upon the laws of pho netic change, upon the use of cases, moods, and tenses, and upon the origin and history of numerous construc tions. The student of Latin grammar is now entitled to the full benefit of the important practical results which these labors in the field of linguistic study have brought within the preper sphere of the school. In securing this advantage, however, care must be taken not to divert the attention of the learner from the one object before him -the attainment of a full and accurate knowledge of the language. Excerpt from Concise Latin Grammar The purpose of the author in preparing this book has been to provide, in as concise a form as possible, a Latin grammar which should be of equal service to the high-school pupil and to the college undergraduate. 'to meet the needs of the former the fundamental and essential facts of the language have been stated as simply as possible and have been given due prominence on an Open page. Statements of secondary importance appear in smaller type and all material that would be confusing to the beginner has been relegated to footnotes, and these have been reduced to a minimum. At the same time the scope of the book is such as to include all that is needed for translation of authors usually read in college. There is an obvious advantage to the student in using the same grammar throughout his Latin course. The needs of the student have been made the guiding principle in the treatment of the examples. These are numerous and have been taken by preference from the portions of Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil read in' secondary schools. Furthermore, they have been simplified when too difficult for ready comprehension, without, however, destroying their validity. In the matter of grammatical nomenclature a conservative attitude has been taken, but such of the new terms have been adopted as seem likely to win general acceptance.
