A translation of the revised version of the 1965 German edition Translated for the benefit of Englishspeaking students of Sanskrit and students of comparative Indo-European linguistics. Mayrhofer's Sanskrit grammar can be used successfully in three different types of course: in elementary Sanskrit courses along with such an elementary text as Jan Gonda's A Concise Elementary Grammar of the Sanskrit Language, with exercises, reading selections, and a glossary, translated from the German by Gordon B. Ford, Jr.; in courses where the linguistic structure of Sanskrit is to be presented; and, finally, in comparative lndo-European courses together with such texts as Antoine Meillet's Introduction to the Comparative Study of the Inda-European Languages, translated from the French by Gordon B. Ford, Jr. All three groups of students should find this important book extremely useful, and I hope that its publication in an English edition will promote the study of Sanskrit in the English-speaking world.

Excerpt from Elementary Grammar of the Sanskrit Language: Partly in the Roman Character; Arranged According to a New Theory, in Reference Especially to the Classical Languages; With Short Extracts in Easy Prose; To Which Is Added, a Selection From the Institute of Manu; With Copious References to the Grammar, An Sm william J ones has said of the Sutras of Panini that they are dark as the darkest oracle; and colebrooke, in one of his Essays, has given a list of about one hundred and forty Indian grammarians and commentators who have followed in the footsteps of the great Patriarch of Sanscrit Grammar, and endeavoured to throw light upon the obscurity of his aphorisms. In this endeavour they have succeeded rather in shewing the depth of their own knowledge, than in making the subject more accessible to the generality of European students; and the explanations which they offer are some times more unintelligible than the original itself. Excerpt from A Practical Grammar of the Sanskrit Language: Arranged With Reference to the Classical Languages of Europe, for the Use of English Students IN 1846 I published a Grammar of the Sanskrit language, which I entitled 'an elementary Grammar, arranged accord ing to a new Theory.' This work is now out of print, and a new edition is required. The increasing experience which, during the subsequent ten years, I have derived from my duties as Sanskrit Professor at the east-india College, where every student without exception is compelled by statute to acquire this language, has led me to modify some of the views I expressed in my first Grammar respect ing the Indian grammatical system. 'i have consequently felt myself called upon to re-write the book; and although I have seen no reason to depart materially from the arrangement originally adopted, yet I am confident that the present enlarged and more complete work will be found even better adapted than its predecessor to the practical wants of the European student.
