Excerpt from A Dictionary of English Church History Such an object would have been unattainable without the help of many scholars. From the outset the idea of the Dictionary was approved and aided by those English bishops best known as Church historians - the present Bishop of Bristol (dr. G. F. Browne), the late Bishop of Gibraltar (dr. W. E. Collins), and the late Bishop of Salisbury (dr. John Wordsworth). Illness unhappily prevented the Bishop of Bristol and the late Bishop of Gibraltar from contributing articles; while the late Bishop of Salisbury had completed only two of his promised articles when, to the heavy loss of English learning, he was removed by death. The Dictionary is intended not so much for the scientifically trained historian as for the ordinary member of the English Church who desires to know the best ascertained facts in the history of the society to which he belongs. To attain this result in one volume compression and some omissions have been necessary. Yet, notwithstanding this, it is hoped that the broad features of the story have been covered. Any lack of proportion in treatment is due to the consideration that a subject admittedly Obscure, when treated by an expert, demands more generous space than a subject already familiar, for which authorities are easily accessible. In fairness to the contributors, it should be said that many articles have been rigorously compressed owing to exigencies of space. It has not been thought necessary to insist on uniformity in the spelling of proper names as to which scholars of repute differ. References have been appended to most articles, designed not so much to justify the conclusions arrived at, as to direct the reader to fuller and more detailed treatment of the matter discussed. Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Church of England The religious Controversies and Ecclesiastical politics of the day are leading to a greatly increased demand for information on Church matters. This 'dictionary 'of the Church of England aims at supplying the demand briefly, accurately, and in the handiest way. In the desire to limit the book in size and cost, so as to make it widely useful, systematic completeness has been sacrificed, and the Subjects most likely to be useful have been arbitrarily selected. The Classified Table of Subjects arranges some of the articles in such an order that the student, reading them consecutively, may find something like connected essays on various subjects, 3. G. On English Church History, Architecture History of the Prayer Book, &c. For some special articles the book is indebted to. The kindness of contributors: those signed R. T. Are by the Rev. Dr. R. Thornton; those signed A. H. Are by Major Alfred Beales those signed J. R. A. By J. Romilly Allen, Esq. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Manual of English Church History If it be a mark of the Catholic Faith to worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in Unity, and to hold with Augustine in his controversy with Pelagius, then the early British Church was Catholic in doctrine and worship. Excerpt from Chapters of Early English Church History The following Chapters are an expansion of Lectures which have been delivered to my Class, while we had Bede's History before us with a view to the Theological Final School. Wishing to connect them, in their present form, with their original purpose, I have retained a few colloquial phrases, and a few local allusions, which seemed natural in addressing a number of Oxford students, of whom several were personally well known to me. The first or introductory Chapter is devoted to the history of the ancient British Church. The general subject of the rest of the volume is the Age of the Conversion of the old-english people to Christianity a great, though comparatively a brief period, extending but little beyond a century, and closing naturally with the death, in 709, of their greatest native Bishop, him self the evangelizer of those among them who, from a peculiar isolation, were the last to receive the Faith. Excerpt from Documents Illustrative of English Church History: Compiled From Original Sources It was obviously impossible, within a limited space to include all such documents; but we hope that we have given at least the majority of those of primary importance which are of a later date than the Norman Conquest. Our meagre selection prior to that date is to be accounted for by the fact that our original scheme was to include nothing earlier than the year 1066; but, on the suggestion of Dr. Bright, Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Oxford, we have inserted a few more ancient documents which are intimately connected with the great landmarks in our early Church history.
