“McCaulay’s prose is lyrical. A solemn adventure about resolve, loyalty, and family, that gives readers insight into life in a small fishing community and brings to light the dangers marine life face in the wild.” — School Library Journal “The relationships between boy and elder, man and sea, crime and poverty all lift McCaulay’s first children’s novel into a different league. Beautiful.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “The heartbreaking realism of this story of innocence lost at sea truly sets this novel apart.” — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books “This makes a good choice for adventure fans, the eco-conscious, and those hoping to understand the economic hardships faced by those who make their living from the sea.” — Booklist “Gone to Drift is a compelling coming-of-age story with a strong sense of place and culture.” — Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA)

Not illustrated. 1870 edition. Excerpt: ...cub? Had he not said that he guessed the young gentleman would get over it? He should see. Joe opened the window, which could unluckily be raised from the outside, and sprang into the room. How he could have the heart to do it, I cannot think; but he took up a sponge which lay near, wet it with turpentine, and rubbed it over the freshly painted canvas. In one instant, instead of sweet Cinderella, there was nothing but an indistinguishable blur. The work of weeks was undone, and the picture, on the sale of which the art ist had depended, was utterly ruined. Having accomplished his evil purpose, Joe withdrew 'as quietly as he had come, leaving the win I dow open. Making a circuit that he might not be observed, he went down to the beach, and rambled for some time along the sea-side, pleasing himself with the thought that he had disobeyed his father and done something toward "paying off those Bennetts..." He went on until he came to what were called the "High Rocks," a group of huge stones piled one above another to the height of seventy or eighty feet, and crowned with stunted evergreen. When the tide was in, as was now the case, the water reached almost to the foot of the "High Rocks; " and here a man, who lived at alittle distance from the shore, kept fastened to a stake a small row-boat, which at' low tide was on the sand, but floated when the water was high. Lois and Zaida had been sitting in this boat, before the water was deep enough to float it, under the shadow of the rocks. Tired with their long day out-doors, they had spread Lois's sacque on the seat for a pillow, and slipping down on the bottom of the skiff, had both fallen asleep, lulled by the drowsy wash and ripple of the sea....
