A Dynamic Systems Theory Perspective On L2 Writing Development

From the perspective of empirical complex dynamic systems, this book investigates the complex and nonlinear process of L2 writing centering on three linguistic aspects of L2 writing development: vocabulary, syntax, and discourse. Combining dynamic systems theory, variation analysis, as well as data and cases studies from Chinese EFL learners’ writing, the book critically engages with the heated discussion on dynamic patterns of L2 writing development that focus heavily on the linguistic dimensions of complexity, accuracy, and fluency. The author expands the scope of the research by integrating both linguistic and functional dimensions of L2 output and examines the interaction and co-development of these dimensions. This framework helps delineate a full picture of individual learners’ L2 writing dynamic patterns across all components of their communicative repertoire. The research findings suggest the developmental path of writing system for each EFL learner may differ, which is influenced by their different learning characteristics and learning environments in China. The title will appeal to scholars interested in applied linguistics and second language acquisition. This volume integrates complex dynamic systems theory (CDST) and L2 writing scholarship through a collection of in-depth studies and commentary across a range of writing constructs, learning contexts, and second and foreign languages. The aim of this pioneering volume is to advance our understanding of written language learning in instructed SLA by offering a collection of empirical studies in which the contribution of diverse theoretical perspectives to our understanding of L2 writing development will be explored. As such, the book represents a further attempt to situate written language learning at the core of applied linguistics research, in general, and SLA research, in particular, hence attempting to redress the oral bias of theoretical and empirical work in these fields. It adds a further building block onto recent TESOL initiatives aimed at understanding "development" in second and foreign language learning. Continuity from one chapter to another is provided by adherence to a consistent chapter model. The volume will be of great interest to academics in the disciplines of second/foreign language acquisition (SLA) and second/foreign language (L2) writing.

Dynamic systems theory, a general theory of change and development, offers a new way to study first and second language development and requires a new set of tools for analysis of empirical data. After a brief introduction to the theory, this book, co-authored by several leading scholars in the field, concentrates on tools and techniques recently developed to analyze language data from a dynamic perspective. The chapters deal with the general thoughts and reasoning behind coding data, analyzing variability, discovering interacting variables and modeling. The accompanying How to sections give step-by-step instructions to using macros to speed up the coding, creating a dedicated lexical profile, making min-max graphs, testing for significance in single case studies by running simulations, and modeling. This book honours the contribution of Marjolijn Verspoor to the development and implementation of dynamic usage-based (DUB) approaches in second language (L2) research and pedagogy. With chapters written by renowned experts in the field, the book addresses the dynamics of language, language learning and language teaching from a usage-based perspective. The book contains both theory and empirical work: the initial theoretical chapters present cutting-edge thinking in relation to both the scope of DUB theory and its applications, providing conceptual perspectives from cognitive grammar and linguistics, thinking-for-speaking (TFS), and Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST) approaches, united by their shared underpinnings of language as a dynamic system of conventionalized routines. The second half of the volume showcases state-of-the-art methodologies to study dynamic trajectories of language learning, empirical investigations into the above-mentioned theoretical concepts, and innovative classroom implementations of DUB language pedagogy.

This edited volume brings together researchers and practitioners who work in various linguistic frameworks and EAP contexts, with contributions from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden, UAE, the UK, Ukraine and the USA. It extends existing linguistic research further by applying theories and approaches and by investigating genres that have received little attention in EAP so far, such as Complex Dynamic Systems Theory, Grice's Cooperative Principle and the article comments and university seminar genres, amongst others. The volume provides linguistic description of both student and expert genres and provides clear pedagogical implications, in the form of teaching recommendations, suggested teaching activities, evaluation of teaching materials or a practical methodological approach. Overall, by focusing on new areas of linguistic research in EAP, the volume enhances teaching practice and inspires further research and scholarship.

This book provides critical perspectives on issues relating to writing norms and assessment, as well as writing proficiency development, and suggests that scholars need to both carefully examine testing regimes and develop research-informed perspectives on tests and testing practices. In this way schools, institutions of adult education and universities can better prepare learners with differing cultural experiences to meet the challenges. The book brings together empirical studies from diverse geographical contexts to address the crossing of literacy borders, with a focus on academic genres and practices. Most of the studies examine writing in countries where the norms and expectations are different, but some focus on writing in a new discourse community set in a new discipline. The chapters shed light on commonalities and differences between these two situations with respect to the expectations and evaluations facing the writers. They also consider the extent to which the norms that the writers bring with them from their educational backgrounds and own cultures are compromised in order to succeed in the new educational settings.

The book seeks to enlarge the theoretical scope, research agenda, and practices associated with TBLT in a two-way dynamic, by exploring how insights from writing might reconfigure our understanding of tasks and, in turn, how work associated with TBLT might benefit the learning and teaching of writing. In order to enrich the domain of task and to advance the educational interests of TBLT, it adopts both a psycholinguistic and a textual meaning-making orientation. Following an issues-oriented introductory chapter, Part I of the volume explores tenets, methods, and findings in task-oriented theory and research in the context of writing; the chapters in Part II present empirical findings on task-based writing by investigating how writing tasks are implemented, how writers differentially respond to tasks, and how tasks can contribute to language development. A coda chapter summarizes the volume’s contribution and suggests directions for advancing TBLT constructs and research agendas.
