Originally published in 1915, this book formed the first English monograph on the Swahili dialects. Detailed information is presented on variations between the many different dialects, together with an appendices section which includes the poem 'The Inkishafi', in both Swahili and an English translation. A significant aspect of the text is that it was written at a time when the newer dialect of Zanzibar was rapidly supplanting numerous older dialects; it can thus be seen as an important document of the Swahili language during a period of change. Central, because while the genius of the Mombasa dialect eschews the blemishes and excrescences which are to be found in the others - the too patent crudities, ambiguities, and corruptions of the careless South, and the needless complications and ironbound archaisms of the too conservative Islanders of the North-the Mombasa speech, in its purity, displays and cultivates to the full all their respective excellences. Situated at the crossroads of dialectology, sociolinguistics and contact linguistics, this volume provides a first comprehensive description of the morphosyntactic inventory of the variety of English spoken on Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands. Based on a specially compiled corpus of spoken material containing both present-day sociolinguistic and archive data, it thereby reveals an intricate network of variation and change in this language-shift variety. The study adopts a cross-varietal approach for its analyses, which enables a first more systematic comparison between the Englishes spoken on Jersey, on its sister island Guernsey and beyond. In addition, it discusses the implications of identity aspects for language use in Jersey. The essays collected in this volume represent many years of Professor Nauert's research and teaching on the history of Renaissance humanism, and more particularly on humanism north of the Alps. Much of the early work involved the significant but often-overlooked history of humanism at the University of Cologne, notoriously the most anti-humanist of the German universities.
