Through out I have tried to build upon the solid ground of fact, and to avoid theories which may require revision as the science advances. The forms and spellings attested by the evidence of inscriptions are adopted so far as they have gained a footing in the best editions of the present day. The evidence is briefly indicated for the use of teachers in Appendix III.
