Excerpt from A Handbook of Virginia In a section where hospitality for centuries has been one of the dominant characteristics of the people, it is not surprising that Virginia's new comers, once settled within her borders, find them selves comfortably established for life. Yet the satisfaction felt in their changed sphere by these strangers is due to something more than the cordial attitude of the native people. Excerpt from Oh, Virginia Virginia she was named, but she has always said "It's too grandly awful," and she is usually called Jinks, except when she has been in scrapes. Somehow that happens pretty often with Jinks, but perhaps it is not always her fault. Jinks has an imagination, and when it is working it promptly moves her to action, and no one is more surprised than she when the result is disaster. If the neighborhood is laughing half the time at Jinks, and the other half is wondering what that child will do next, it is largely because she is left too much to herself by a mother and father who have not mt realized how much she needs them. When the biggest scrape of all came along, Mrs. Weatherby was there to help straighten things out, and what the scrape was and how it was happily ended is told in the story. Excerpt from School History of Virginia A very practical difficulty in the preparation of a text book on history exists in the fact that the length of the school session varies so widely in different locali ties. To meet, as far as it is possible to do, the demands of the school with a full nine months session, as well as the school with a six months session, with a single book, the School History has been so arranged that sections can be omitted without destroying the story as a whole. It is unnecessary to say that. Omissions should not be made unless necessary, but in view of actual difficulties, the text can be shortened to suit the individual school. Excerpt from History of Virginia: A Brief Text Book for Schools The Indians of virginia.-when the territory now included in Virginia was first settled by the English, it was occupied by an Indian population numbering about ten thousand, divided among more than forty clans or tribes. Each of these was ruled over by a chief; and about thirty of them were united in a loose confederacy under a head-chief named Powhatan. There were also two smaller confederacies and a few scattering tribes which maintained their independence. All the Virginia Indians belonged to the great Algonkin 1 family.
