Samson is a peculiar character. He is the most powerful of the Israelite judges and three whole chapters in the book of Judges are allocated to him. Yet he demonstrates many weaknesses, not least for the charms of women. In the international conference “Samson: Hero or Fool?” organised at the University of Nijmegen in April, 2008, the texts of Judges 16-18 were studied from different perspectives, investigating how the complex character of this (anti)hero lived on in various ways in the later traditions about him. The contributions discuss also the reception history of the Samson traditions in later Jewish, Christian and Islamic literature, as well as his representation in figurative and performing arts

The Bird's Head Peninsula of New Guinea covers some 30,000 square kilometres of enormously varied landscape. Although it is home to an indigenous population of just 114,000, these people share more than twenty languages. Wider knowledge of the peninsula was recently gained through an extensive interdisciplinary research project (ISIR) involving anthropologists, archaeologists, botanists, demographers, geologists, linguists, and specialists in public administration. In analysing the findings of the project, this book provides a systematic comparison with earlier studies, addressing the geological past, the latest archaeological evidence of early human habitation (dating back at least 26,000 years), and the region s diversity of languages and cultures. The peninsula is an important transitional area between Southeast Asia and Oceania, and this book provides valuable new insights for specialists in both the social and natural sciences into processes of state formation and globalization in the Asia Pacific zone. Jelle Miedema studied sociology and anthropology at Groningen University. Awarded his PhD at Nijmegen University, he became coordinator of the ISIR project at Leiden University. His research topics include ethnohistory, kinship, and religion.

THE PROFESSOR WITH MANY FACES Two decaying corpses are found buried on campus. A bizarre chemistry professor, a developing international conspiracy, and suspected sabotage of a war production factory confront Sam and Howie when they enroll as freshmen at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. The year is 1944 and the United States is at war with the Axis powers. When Sam and Howie discover written communications during their chemistry classes that appear to be coded messages they attempt to decipher the baffling combinations of letters. Ominous and life-threatening events then develop that include Nazi agents, escaped German P.O.W. s, and Spade Digger, the rather odd owner of a nearby mortuary. The county sheriff, his inept deputy, the F.B.I. and the U.S. Office of Strategic Services are all involved in the attempt to solve this complicated and threatening intrigue. Will Sams romantic interest in Ginny, his long time heartthrob, survive the tensions of war? And will Howies new-found love continue to blossom? Will Sam and Howie be able to survive the academic challenges at Taylor and at the same time overcome the hair-raising gauntlet of circumstances facing them as they attempt to expose The Professor with Many Faces? You will have to read every chapter to find out.
