It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Excerpt from The Teaching of English Literature in Secondary Schools This little book was originally projected by Mr. A. C. Guthkelch, of King's College, and was to be written by us in common. The pressure of other work prevented him from carrying out his share of the undertaking, and, at the request of the publishers, I took up the work alone. For the plan of the book I am mainly, and for the execution entirely, responsible. Mr. Guthkelch's originality and accurate scholarship would have produced a very different kind of book, and the chapters which follow can have little or nothing to offer to the trained teacher of literature; but there are many who, without special training, have to teach literature as a subsidiary subject, and to them these hints and suggestions of method may be useful. My aim has been practical guidance, rather than originality. Doubtless the results of my own reading will be found imbedded in what I have here written, and for this I need make no apology; I have not, however, consulted for this present purpose, nor consciously drawn upon any books of reference or histories of literature. Excerpt from A History of English Literature A manual has been prepared which discusses the general problems of teaching literature and supplies for each chapter a large amount of additional material and suggestions for the teacher. This separate publication makes it possible to address every word in the textbook itself to the pupil. Two suggestions to the teacher, duly emphasized in the man ual, may be barely noted here. First, the teacher should give special aid to the pupil on the Opening chapters, which survey periods remote and therefore difficult for the modern reader. The first two chapters might well be studied in the class under the teacher's guidance. Second, the teacher should never separate the study of the textbook from the study of literature itself. The book strives to guide the pupils to an interested reading of the best poetry and prose. This should also be the chief aim of the teacher.
