I had been a member of a public grammar school of the city of Boston, and at the age of nine I was sent to the Latin School, and was a member of that school for three years. Thence I went to the Round Hill School, Northampton, a principal reason for the change being the advantage of a country life. The school had been established nearly two years, and already had a great reputation; I was the seventieth boy and found there companions from all parts of the country. Excerpt from History of St. Paul and Vicinity, Vol. 2: A Chronicle of Progress and a Narrative Account of the Industries, Institutions and People of the City, and Its Tributary Territory A similar enlightened policy has dictated the opening, by the St. Paul board of education, of a continuation sch'ool for pupils under Six teen years of age who are compelled to work and who have not completed the grade course in the public schools. This is an important provision of the compulsory education law and its strict enforcement is essential to the protection of the working children. Under the proposed system the working children who come within the provisions of the law will be given certain hours each day in school in order to do the study equivalent to a completion of the grade course in the public schools. The cooperation of employers, by which the little toilers will not lose any of their wages while attending the school for a few hours each day, is an important feature of the plan and should be secured without difficulty. Both the children and their employers will derive ultimate benefit by compliance with the terms of the plan. It is unfortunate that children under sixteen years of age should be compelled to become wage earners, but the evils of the condition will be greatly lessened by successful conduct of the continuation school. No one in the United States appreciates the work of our Founder more highly than you do; few have done more to make it known and honoured among your countrymen. When, in the summer of 1884, after an interval of forty years, you came on an important mission to London, it was one of your first cares to visit Dean Colet's school, then just housed afresh in its stately home in the western suburbs. As you stood before the ancient bust of the Founder, your visit might well have seemed to you something of a pilgrimage. Nearly four centuries had rolled away since Columbus first set foot on the island shore of San Salvador. Those centuries passed, the land whose outskirts were then discovered had become a mighty nation; and one of its bishops was standing before the image of an English contemporary of Columbus, a pioneer, in the world of religion and letters, with a faith as strong and a vision as far-reaching as his. In the presence of such memories as those raised by the names of Columbus and Colet, the petty differences of the hour, that may spring up between two great branches of one common stock, will fade into their proper insignificance.
