Excerpt from A Letter to Her Majesty the British Queen Of those who were implicated in the late revolutionary movements in, the Canadas, the writer and publisher of this volume was the first put upon trial, with the intention on the part of the British government that he should have been the first to be executed. Why he escaped will be understood after a perusal of these pages. There are now about 150 citizens of the United States, who were captured by the military forces of Great Britain in the Canadas during the late revolutionary movements, still held by that government as prisoners of state. They have been sent to Van Dieman's Land, one of the British penal colonies, where they have been reduced to the condition of common felons; and thrust into a convict station with thieves, robbers, burglars and others of the vilest of the overflowings of the prisons of the the British empire - without sufficient food or necessary clothing they are being compelled to labor for unreasonable hours at the most servile employment: and made subject to the lash and other severities, unusual to be inflicted by civilized people. Those men, having been induced to believe that a hearty struggle was about to be made by the Canadians for liberty, with a generous motive, volunteered their services to aid them in their efforts; and so doing became prisoners. By the publication of this volume, it is hoped to bring the attention of our own government, as well as that of Great Britain, to the condition of those, our unfortunate fellow-citizens; and that the British government may then be induced to set them at liberty. Should it prove one of the means of bringing about the desired result, the sole object of the publication will have been attained. Aside from the matters which bear upon the object expressed, this volume will be found to contain expositions of legal questions, which give it value, as a book of reference; particularly, on trials by Court Martial. Excerpt from The Letters of Queen Victoria, Vol. 3 of 3: A Selection From Her Majesty's Correspondence Between the Years 1837 and 1861, Published by Authority of His Majesty the King It cannot be denied that the position Of the Prince is somewhat anomalous, and has not been specially provided for by the Constitution; but the ties Of Nature, and the dictates of common-sense are more powerful than Constitutional fictions; and Lord Aberdeen can only say that he has always considered it an inestimable blessing that your Majesty Should possess SO able, so zealous, and so disinterested an adviser. It is true that your Ministers are alone responsible for the conduct Of public affairs, and although there is no man in England Whose Opinion Lord Aberdeen would more highly respect and value, still if he had the misfortune Of differing from His Royal Highness, he would not hesitate to act accord ing to his own convictions, and a sense Of what was due to your Majesty's service. Excerpt from Queen Elizabeth: Various Scenes and Events in the Life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was Of majestic and graceful form, a little above the medium height, neither too high nor too low, as she herself naively re marked. She had hair of a colour between pale auburn and yellow, black eyes, which were beau tiful and lively, a fair, clear complexion, a Roman nose, a small mouth with thin, firmly set lips, and a forehead broad and high. Her face was striking and commanding rather than delicately beautiful, the countenance of one born to rule. She pos sessed many personal attractions and no one could be more charming and gracious upon occasion than this mighty Princess of the Royal House of Tudor, with that slow, sweet smile of hers and her quick, ever-ready wit. Sir Francis Bacon says, She was tall Of stature, of comely limbs, and excellent feature in her countenance; majesty sat under veil of sweet ness, and her health was sound and prosperous. Excerpt from Life and Times of Her Majesty Caroline Matilda, Vol. 2 of 3: Queen of Denmark and Norway, and Sister of H. M. George III. Of England Perhaps you may wonder to receive a letter Without a name on a matter of so great importance from a friend who formerly used to tell you the truth before your face: but the times we live in now will not jus tify a man in exposing himself to danger, without seeing any good arising from it. The two last court days I sought for an opportunity at Hirschholm to Speak a few words to you in private, but I found it was impossible. You might have Ob served that if you had been at all attentive: but I found you SO much engaged with another Object that I could not approach near enough to you to make you under stand what I wanted, and I thought it inadvisable to go to Hirschholm on purpose to pay you a Visit.
