A Life Renewed 1983 1998

A Life Renewed, 19831998 continues the personal story begun in Roderick Stackelbergs earlier autobiographical volumes, Out of Hitlers Shadow and Memory and History. The basic themes stressed in the prefaces to the first two volumes of his autobiographythe desire to honestly share his experiences in an aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable way retain their relevance for this later volume as well. This third volume covers his happiest and most generative years, including his new marriage to Sally Winkle and his work as a professor of history at Gonzaga University. His richly illustrated personal and professional stories are interspersed with a running commentary on the extraordinary political changes in the closing years of the twentieth century. The title of this volume, A Life Renewed, 1983-1998, refers to both his new marriage to Sally and to the birth of their son, Emmet, in 1991. The fifteen years covered in this volume are infused with the joys of a happy marriage, a gifted late-born off spring, and some limited but satisfying professional success. He also chronicles the successes of his older children as they pursue college and careers. Stackelberg considers this period to be the high noon of his life, before the onset of old age and ill health at the turn of the century.

This book is the fourth volume of Dr. Stackelbergs memoirs. It covers the years from 1999 to 2012, years of productive scholarship and declining health.

This book is an exploration of the renewal of the Baptist Union of Great Britain in the 1990s, the only historic UK denomination which grew in this period. It was an exciting time, with plenty of denominational activity and engagement, both theological and institutional. The book tells this story focusing on the particular individuals involved and the wide-ranging discussions centered around mission and identity, ministry, associating, and ecumenism. It argues that there were competing visions emerging from two different streams of thought which whilst not divisive caused tension. At the end of the decade structural changes were introduced with hope for the new millennium, but the book contends that opportunities were missed for a more deeply theological renewal.

It is my belief that the impending challenge to our civilization will not be how to cope with the future shock of a rapidly developing technology of material abundance but, rather, how to live with less. The pre-eminence of institutional schooling, either as a form of moral suasion to inculcate the masses in the age-old values or as a human assembly line feeding the economy, must give way to the learning needs of individuals struggling to reorient their lifestyles. This reordering of priorities will produce the most profound sense of change our society has experienced since the Great Depression ... Our present system of schooling by technician must give way to a new concept of teacher as change agent. This person will continue to stress literacy as a basic life skill, a fundamental on which to build patterns of lifelong learning. However, other basic skills must include cooperative problem solving, social and emotional fulfilment, and the ability to identify, analyse, develop, and use resources as part of a process of learning to cope with continuous change.
