The son of a missionary and a Baptist minister, seventeen-year-old immigrant David George Ball was following his destiny to become a pastor. He had always dreamed of making a difference in people's lives. But when he met the then relatively unknown Martin Luther King Jr., the course of Ball's life changed forever. In this memoir, A Marked Heart, Ball narrates his journey: beginning with growing up in wartime England; immigrating to the United States in 1954 to take the pastor's course at Chicago's Moody Bible Institute; attending Yale University as a scholarship student; and, most importantly, meeting King. Later, he worked on Wall Street as a lawyer, started a family, championed the 401(k) plan, and served as assistant secretary of labor. A Marked Heart describes how Ball's encounter with King inspired the rest of his life's work, and it provides a multifaceted look at his immigration, education, family relationships, career, and his commitment to public service. Though Ball never became a minister, his story communicates how his commitment to God and prayer guided his life. A heartwarming portrait of faith pushing back against adversity, in an amazing journey inspired by Martin Luther King. The Right Reverend Herman Hollerith IV, Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia Episcopal Church In his early life, David George Ball, like Mr. Justice Holmes, had the break of being touched with fire,' having a religious father, a strict mother, and contact with Martin Luther King Jr. If this nation is to remain great, such ideas as expressed in David's book should be introduced to persons in their last year of high school or their first year of college. Meet the next generation of Marked Hearts: FIRST- We bonded over books and joined forces against my sister's torments as often as possible. We were close until we got a little too curious with each other one summer night and she ended up going to live with her dad in Michigan. Because, coincidentally, the girl who gave me my name, was also my first. PALMER- There's only so much a man can take. Each day, I can feel my self-control slipping. One more accidental touch and I'm gonna break. One more goofy smile and I won't be able to hold back anymore. One more drum beat and I'm done. ROE- I am a survivor. I didn’t do anything noble. I didn’t fight the good fight and come out on top. It was chance. I’m not ungrateful for the life I have. I know exactly what I have to live for. The problem is… I don’t feel alive. WREN- They say you never forget your first kiss. Well, I did. Somewhere in the mix of random guys and hookups, the memory of a soft kiss on a hot summer afternoon slipped away from me. That was until the night he walked into my dad’s bar looking for a job. *The 2nd Generation: Box Set contains four Caffrey family standalone novels each told in first person point of view.* ★★★★★The characters are compelling & I love them all. ★★★★★Read, Laugh, Cry and Laugh some more... Learn how to create a workforce that’s more creative, more driven, and more enthusiastic about reaching company goals. Every great company has an engaged workforce, and nurturing a culture of engagement is at the heart of great leadership—employees who really care about their work, their coworkers, and the organization can supercharge a company’s success. But for many years, engagement has been suffering. Gallop reports that seventy percent of employees are not fully engaged on the job. Mark Miller draws on more than forty years of leadership experience to show leaders at all levels how to change the conversation and create real competitive advantage in the process. In the fourth book in Miller’s High Performance Series, CEO Blake Brown sets out to discover how to create the kind of workplace where everyone feels excited to come to work, passionate about what he or she brings to the company, and energized at the end of the day. It’s a journey that takes him literally all over the world—from Italy to Greece to Green Bay and more. What he discovers from the pages of history is as relevant as the evening news. Engagement unleashes untapped potential buried deep within the hearts of your people. An engaged workforce is more creative, more driven, and more enthusiastic about reaching company goals. If you put the lessons in this book to work, your people will never look at work, or their leaders, the same way again. “Virtually anything is possible if enough people care…Win the Heart will show you how to ensure they do!” —Scott Harrison, New York Times–bestselling author of Thirst “Win the Heart is an easy, entertaining, and engaging read with simple yet powerful reminders of our role as leaders. Reporting for the Los Angeles Times on the international blind tasting competition held annually in Amsterdam known as the Cannabis Cup, novelist Mark Haskell Smith sampled a variety of marijuana that was unlike anything he’d experienced. It wasn’t anything like typical stoner weed, in fact it didn’t get you stoned. This cannabis possessed an ephemeral quality known to aficionados as “dankness.” Armed with a State of California Medical Marijuana recommendation, he begins a journey into the international underground where super-high-grade marijuana is developed and tracks down the rag-tag community of underground botanists, outlaw farmers, and renegade strain hunters who pursue excellence and diversity in marijuana, defying the law to find new flavors, tastes, and effects. This unrelenting pursuit of dankness climaxes at the Cannabis Cup, which Haskell Smith vividly portrays as the Super Bowl/Mardi Gras of the world's largest cash crop.
