Excerpt from A Modern Mystic's Way Michael Fairless, to whom this book is dedicated, is more widely and better known than she was when it was first published nine years ago. Her influence may now be more frankly confessed, not only because she has friends the world over, but also because her wish to hide herself has been frustrated, and in her printed 'Life' anyone may discover what manner of woman she really was. The spiritual harvest of her life as it was lived is another matter. These pages are intended to show - they do so clumsily, I think, and obscurely - something of that harvest. Excerpt from Mysticism and Modern Life The task, for the author, relates itself very closely to one in which he has been for some time engaged and to which his previous volumes have been devoted - the study of the nature of Personality. In pursuing such a study it is impossible to pass by the mystics with their rich contribution to the meaning of this most fundamental of realities. The gentle reader who does not care for the critical discussion of mysticism may omit Part II. The author deems this, however, to be a very essential part of the volume One does not like to be a fool, even a blessed fool, as a neighbor of mine remarks. Without a philosophy to justify him the mystic can hardly escape this suspicion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Mystic Way: A Psychological Study in Christian Origins It is the object of this book to trace out that type of life, that peculiar quality of consciousness, which is called "mystical," from its earliest appearance within Christianity; to estimate, so far as is possible, the true character and origin of the Christian mystic, and define the qualities which differentiate him from those other mystics who have been evolved along other lines of spiritual development, Oriental, Neoplatonic, or Mahomedan. It is now acknowledged by many psychologists - amongst whom Leuba and Delacroix are of special importance, since their conclusions are entirely free from theological bias - that the Christian mystic does possess such differentiating characters; and represents, so far as the psychical nature of man is concerned, a genuine species apart. Leuba, indeed, does not hesitate to call him "one of the most amazing and profound variations of which the human race has yet been witness." This being so, his origin and real significance have surely a special importance for those interested in the spiritual evolution of humanity. We are still too often told that Christian mysticism is no integral part of Christianity: sometimes, even, that it represents an opposition to the primitive Christian ideal. Sometimes we are asked to believe that it originated from Neoplatonic influence; that Pagan blood runs in its veins, and that its genealogy goes back to Plotinus. Far from this being the case, all the doctrines and all the experiences characteristic of genuine Christian mysticism can be found in the New Testament; and I believe that its emergence as a definite type of spiritual life coincides with the emergence of Christianity itself, in the person of its Founder. Excerpt from Nature Mysticism The aims of this study of Nature Mysticism, and the methods adopted for attaining them, are sufficiently described in the introductory chapter. It may be said, by way of special preface, that the nature mystic here portrayed is essentially a modern. He is assumed to have accepted the fundamentals of the hypothesis of evolution. Accordingly, his sympathy With the past is pro found: so also is his sense of the reality and con tinuity of human development, physical, psychic, and mystical. Moreover, he tries to be abreast of the latest critical and scientific conclusions. Im perfections manifold will be discovered in the pages that follow; but the author asks that a percentage of them may be attributed to the difficulties of writing in Tasmania and publishing at the antipodes. Excerpt from The Mystical Life Two questions will arise at once in the minds of some readers Is there a Catholic Traditional Mysticism and if so, in what does it differ from any other mysticism? For, with many people, the conviction prevails, and is strongly rooted, that Mysticism is a relatively modern discovery, and was quite unknown to the mediaeval Doctors, let alone the Fathers of the Church and the Christians of the first centuries.
