Life can hold rich possibilities even for those with a mental illness. Learning to live with a mood disorder is something people do gradually, as life unfolds. Bit by bit they begin to recognise the symptoms. Gradually they begin to manage their illness. Marja Bergen is one of those people. Over the 30 years that she has had manic depression, she has gradually adopted a lifestyle that makes it possible not only to cope, but to live a full and productive life. In 'Riding the Roller Coaster', she shares some very practical tips, including escaping the blues before they grab you, what to do when you don't feel like doing anything, and keeping life stable. But there are obstacles. There is a social stigma attached to mental illness. Marja Bergen believes that this stigma can be overcome. It is a matter of accepting mental illness as an illness like any other. It is a matter of attitude. The attitude of individuals with a mental illness -- toward themselves, toward their illness and toward their potential makes a great deal of difference. To become really well, a person must work hard to improve their own life. Taking control and making things happen is far better than waiting for something to happen, and Marja Bergen writes with warmth and eloquence about how to do exactly that.

Written for pre-teens and young teens in lively text accompanied by fun facts, True or False? The Science of Perception, Misinformation, and Disinformation explores what psychology tells us about development and persistence of false perceptions and beliefs and the difficulty of correcting them, plus ways to debunk misinformation and think critically and factually about the world around us. This book explores how we think and perceive and why false beliefs, superstitions, opinions, misinformation, or wild guesses can just stick around and mess things up. You’ll see how misunderstandings and misuse of scientific findings can lead people to the wrong conclusions. Readers learn how to outsmart their brain to gain critical thinking skills and find ways to identify and correct false beliefs and disinformation. Our big brains are super-efficient but glitchy. Scientists estimate that 90% of what we see, hear, smell, or sense never really sinks in. Instead, we pick up on the big things, general impressions, or important stuff and end up leaving our brains to fill in the missing info. And on top of that, people sometimes twist information on purpose. False beliefs can be shared from person to person or go viral in a flash, often by people who think the info is true. So how in the world do we know what’s real, what’s true, or who to believe? Dig in and get the facts!

Our Roller Coaster Ride is about the last six years of my husband's life. He had a tough battle with congestive heart failure. We had very eventful, harassing and hurtful times, yet some were also beautiful. There are so many memories that have been created. My times, his disease brought smiles, but also tears. I had a hard time coping with his illness. At times, I thought that I was the only one this was happening to, but after talking to the hospital staff, I found out that maybe I wasn't. I wrote this book to let others know that they are not alone, and maybe some of my experiences or bits of advice will help you cope better than I did at times. We always have to remember that there is so much wrong with them, and we will never understand what they are going through. We are their backbone and support, so we have to always stay strong for them. Good luck to all.
