A Study In String Processing Languages

Language prototyping provides a means to generate language implementations automatically from high-level language definitions. This volume presents an algebraic specification approach to language prototyping, and is centered around the ASF+SDF formalism and Meta-Environment. The volume is an integrated collection of articles covering a number of case studies, and includes several chapters proposing new techniques for deriving advanced language implementations. The accompanying software is freely available.

Röntgenbefund und die sich in ihm widerspiegelnde pathologische Anatomie sind neben dem klinischen Bild die wichtigsten Säulen, auf denen die Diagnostik von Knochengeschwülsten und geschwulstähnlichen Läsionen beruht. Radiologen und Pathologen stellen in diesem Buch Klinik, Radiologie und Histolgie der verschiedenen Knochenläsionen am Gliedmaßen- und Achsenskelett umfassend und synoptisch dar. Das umfangreiche Material resultiert aus einer fünfzehnjährigen interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit. In einem einleitenden Kapitel werden die verschiedenen radiologischen (konventionelles Röntgenbild, CT, Kernspintomographie, Angiographie, transkutane Biopsie) und histologischen Untersuchungstechniken und ihre Wertigkeit beschrieben. Der radiologischen Befundungsmethodik von Knochengeschwülsten u.a. mit Hilfe der Lodwick-Graduierung und einem neueren Staging-System für Knochengeschwülste werden eigene Kapitel gewidmet. Im speziellen Teil des Buches erfolgt die Darstellung der einzelnen benignen und malignen Knochengeschwülste in einer systematischen Untergliederung in ihre Häufigkeit, Lokalisation, Alters- und Geschlechtsprädilektion, Klinik und Prognose, Histologie, Radiologie und Differentialdiagnose. Besonders die unter den Knochengeschwülsten und tumorähnlichen Läsionen häufig vorkommenenden Entitäten sind mit einem umfassenden Bildmaterial ausgestattet, um dem breiten Spektrum ihrer Morphologie gerecht zu werden. Durch das Verständnis klinischer, radiologischer und pathologisch-anatomischer Befunde werden Diagnostik und Therapie der Skelettläsionen sehr erleichtert. Die synoptische Art der Darstellung macht dieses Buch für alle Disziplinen, die sich mit Knochentumoren befassen, zu einem idealen Nachschlagewerk.

The organization of the page as a technological device and our acquisition of information from it were subjects of keen interest to psychologists and designers a century ago. Research on the topics proceeded briskly for more than a quarter of a century then, and was brought together in the still useful survey and analysis of them all that E. B. Huey published in 1908 as "The psychology and pedagogy of reading, with a review of the history of reading and writing and of methods, texts, and hygiene in reading. " Research on the psychological aspects of literacy tended to diminish after that peak, but research on design and on the technology of presenting infor mation has flourished apace meanwhile. Perhaps somewhat stimulated by the reissue of Huey's book by MIT Press in 1968, psychologists have returned to the study of literacy. The symposium that the present volume reports was an effort to bring together again psychologists interested in literacy and related forms of information acquisition, graphics designers, and engineers actively involved in the development and deployment of the newer technology. During this century, psychologists, graphics designers, and engineers have lost much of the mutual communication that their joint enterprise should encourage. The design of machines has often followed the convenience of packaging, the design of displays has often followed the designer's personal esthetic.

This book presents developments of a language independent theory of program structure. The theory features a simple, natural notion of control structure which is much broader than in other theories of programming languages such as denotational semantics and program schemes. This notion permits treatment of control structures which involve not only the denotation of programs (i.e., their input/output behavior), but also their structure, size, run times, etc. The theory also treats the relation of control structure and complexity properties of programming languages. The book focuses on expressive interdependencies of control structures (which control structures can be expressed by which others). A general method of proving control structures expressively independent is developed. The book also considers characterizations of the expressive power of general purpose programming languages in terms of control structures. Several new characterizations are presented and two compactness results for such characterizations are shown.
