Excerpt from A Treatise on Roads and Pavements The problems involved in the construction and maintenance Of rural highways differ materially from those which are encountered in the improvement and care Of city streets, and therefore this discussion Of the subject Of Roads and Pavements will be divided into Part I, Country Roads, and Part II, City Pavements. In each division Of the subject certain general principles will first be considered, and the further discussion will be divided according to the several materials in use for road surfaces. It will not always be possible to keep the several portions entirely distinct, but a knowledge Of the intention in this respect will make it easier to understand the method Of presentation or to turn readily to the discussion Of any particular phase Of the subject. The classification Of road surfaces into country Roads and City Pavements is partly according to the most general use Of each, and partly according to the elaborateness Of the construction. According to the somewhat loose classification here adopted road surfaces for country roads consist Of two parts, subgrade and wearing coat; while city pavements consist Of four parts, sub grade, foundation, a binder or cushion course, and a wearing coat. Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Roads, Streets, and Pavements In the preparation of the following pages a few leading objects have been kept in view by the author. First. To give, within the compass of one small volume, such descriptions of the various methods of locating country roads, and of constructing the road and street coverings in more or less common use at the present day, as will render the essential details of those methods, as well as certain improvements thereon of which many of them are believed to be susceptible, familiar to any intelligent non-professional reader. Second. To make such practical suggestions with respect to the selection and application of materials, more especially those, with the properties and uses of which builders are presumed to be the least acquainted, as seem needful in order to develop their greatest practical worth, and realize their greatest endurance. Third. To institute a just and discriminating comparison of the respective merits of the several street pavements now competing for popular recognition and favor, under the varying conditions of traffic, climate, and locality, to which they are commonly subjected. Excerpt from A Treatise on Highway Construction: Designed as a d104-Book and Work of Reference for All Who May Be Engaged in the Location, Construction, or Maintenance of Roads, Streets, and Pavements Although volumes have been written on the subject of highway construction, still the matter is widely scattered through the pages of the standard works on engineering, technical journals and periodicals, in pamphlets and reports of city engineers, and is therefore not always easily accessible when wanted. The author, having found the need of a comprehensive and practical work of reference upon the many subjects connected with highways, has in the following pages endeavored to collate the varied mass of information. In doing so he has derived valuable assistance from the works of the authors mentioned below (which works may be profitably studied by those desiring further information upon the subjects treated of), and takes this method of acknowledging his indebtedness and thanks, instead of inclosing every extract in quotation-marks.
