Abiding Hope

Every tradition has its surprising voices, its thinkers who look at things slightly differently than most. Evangelicalism is no exception. Many surprising evangelical voices end up being embarrassments of one sort or another: everyone can choose their favorite example of this phenomenon! Rather than seeking to expose these sorts of negative surprises, this book explores the surprising voice of the late evangelical theologian A. J. Conyers. Conyers's political theology is a resource for a robust evangelical theopolitical imagination. By learning from Conyers, evangelicals can overcome common weaknesses and engage in a more thoroughly Christian, biblical, and evangelical approach to the modern world and its various institutions and challenges. Conyers speaks beyond evangelicalism as well. His vision of the modern world, including its development and major challenges, provides insight into contemporary political theology. His work on the nation-state, free-market capitalism, and the notions of toleration and vocation speaks into and advances important debates. Thus Conyers's evangelical political theology provides both the evangelical tradition itself, as well as political theology as a broader discipline, with a compelling and challenging vision.

Some families, it appears, cruise serenely through life with very little turmoil and tragedy while some others experience a host of disasters and catastrophes as their story unfolds. It is for these that the author has written. She and her family have lived through many tragedies; it seems that they are either just getting over some upheaval, or they are heading into one, but there have been some very joyous times for her as well. Perhaps the mountaintops have been higher because of the valleys. Even now, as these words are written, there is illness and worry going on, but with faith in God and hope always in her heart, the joy of living remains. Thanks be to God.

HISTORY / JEWISH / HOLOCAUST. There will come a time, not too many years from now, when no one who suffered at the hands of the Nazis will be here to proclaim: "I was there. This happened to me. I saw this." It took Benjamin Samuelson 50 years before he could begin to relate his story to Jeff Shevlowitz. From his happy childhood in Rumania to the horrors of four Nazi concentration camps to the Israeli struggle for independence--this author's story is of historical significance; countless miracles; and the will to live, with abiding hope, to tell the world of what he had witnessed. The author is one of few survivors of the Auschwitz Sonderkommando, reflecting: "I don't understand how or why I made it through alive. . . . I woke, ate, did the task assigned me, and had but one thought: Why? So many times, I considered walking into the air-tight brick room with the next group of people. Why didn't I? The only answer I've been able to think of is that some inner, divine spark of life would not allow it. I sincerely felt that by living, I would one day bear witness." And that day has come with the writing of this book. In order to keep the promise that Benjamin Samuelson made to himself more than a half century ago, he felt he must now tell his story, while he is still able to, in memory of those who can no longer bear witness to the Holocaust for themselves.

There are the times in our lives when hope is hard to find, when we often have more questions than answers, and when fear and worry clamor to be our constant companions. Abiding Hope offers encouragement and inspiration for those times. T. Windahl has endured many trials in her life, including four cancers within ten years, but she is a survivor! It addresses the unforeseen struggles she faces as she tries with all that is within her to stay and care for her aged husband when she so desperately longs to go. She now lives her life between these two choices. She tries to answer some serious questions about how and why she found herself in this position in the first place; and now even more importantly, how she can live with this situation today. When people are by themselves there are some times of expected loneliness, but it is tragic to be in a relationship with someone, living together, yet alone. What should she do? Choices- choices-choices!
