Academic Year Abroad

Education abroad is an essential part of the university student experience. Initiatives such as IIE’s Generation Study Abroad encourage more U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad. According to the Open Doors 2019 Report by the Institute for International Education (IIE), 341,751 students participated in post-secondary education abroad programs during the 2017/2018 academic year. This figure represents an increase of 2.7% of U.S. students studying abroad from the previous year. Research shows that education abroad provides students with opportunities not only to see the world but also to develop intercultural competence, which is increasingly crucial in the 21st century workplace. There are also numerous studies that show gains in autonomy, confidence, and tolerance for ambiguity in students who complete some type of study abroad experience. In sum, the education abroad experience in itself represents a powerful learning environment that continues to support personal and professional development long after returning home. Nonetheless, these learning environments must be cultivated along with faculty who develop and lead programs, as well as university partners and providers. Furthermore, education abroad programming and assessment is complex and must take into consideration many factors including academic goals, purposeful curricular development, and a balance between academics and leisure activities on site. This book explores the many aspects of education abroad as a learning environment, such as student learning outcomes, faculty development, and program assessment and evaluation. In addition, several chapters present education abroad experiences as a model for community engagement and activism. The authors represent a diverse range of institutions and perspectives and discuss programs around the globe. The book represents the voices of faculty that lead education abroad programs, students who participate in them, and also those of international students on a U.S. campus reflecting on their personal experiences abroad. Furthermore, this book contributes to the discussion of best practices to assist faculty and program directors in creating robust education abroad programs that meet the needs of their students and institutions.

A guide to over 1,110 study-abroad programs is presented. The programs are offered during the academic year and are sponsored or co-sponsored by U.S. colleges. Programs may include language study, independent study, or internships. An introductory section covers several topics including language proficiency, types of study-abroad programs, finances, and travel and living abroad. Entries include the name and address of the sponsoring school or consortia and brief information on the following points: the countries or cities in which resident study takes place, dates and/or duration of the program and the deadline for application, courses of study, the academic level/class and any minimum age requirements, the number of undergraduate or graduate credits offered, eligibility requirements, the language of instruction, teaching methods, costs and type of financial aid available, housing, background information on the program, and whether students attend regular academic courses at a foreign institution or special courses for foreign students and/or courses arranged for the group and taught by U.S. and/or foreign faculty. Appended are an annotated bibliography, a list of consortia, and indexes of sponsoring organizations and fields of study. (SW)

Introductory sections provide information on the Institute of International Education (IIE), IIE publications, the use of the guide, planning study abroad, and 78 publications and 34 websites on study and research abroad and funding opportunities. The majority of the guide consists of individual program descriptions, arranged geographically by region and country. In addition to specific country and city listing, there is a "worldwide" section for programs that are active in more than one world region. Each listing provides information on program sponsor, name of the program, program site, dates, subjects of study and opportunities to learn foreign languages, eligibility, credit, instructional methods and language(s) of instruction, costs, housing, deadline, other information, and contact point. Programs are indexed by program sponsor, consortia, field of study, special options, cost, and duration. Options range from lecture courses and intensive language immersions to internships, student teaching, field research, and voluntary service. The body of the guide consists of program descriptions arranged alphabetically by geographic region and country. There is also a "worldwide" section for programs that are active in more than one area. Each listing provides information on the institutional sponsored and enrollment and contact information. This volume draws together a selection of papers from YAC2018, the first meeting in the annual Year Abroad Conference series, which took place at Newcastle University in September 2018. The contributions collected here examine some of the opportunities, gains, and challenges the Year Abroad brings for both students and staff.
