The profession of guiding in North America has a long and distinguished history that dates back more than one hundred years. In that time, a great number of guides from around the world, including Canada, have used and revised traditional techniques and developed skills specifically suited to local areas. Today’s guiding industry is based on this groundwork and continues to evolve at a significant pace. This manual defines technical guidelines for professional guides who are trained and certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG); however, no one person or organization can lay claim to the techniques included here.

This manual was developed to support the ACMG’s Training and Assessment Program (TAP) courses in the ski guiding stream, and as a reference for ACMG-certified guides.

This issue focuses on two new perspectives. The first is a more international perspective from the very active and thriving faculty development work being done in Canada. The second is curriculum design. The authors attempt to blend the very real need for institutions to engage in regular curriculum practice as a growth experience and the important role that faculty can lay in the process. In addition, they propose the idea of a scholarship of curriculum practice to complement the scholarship of teaching and learning. Chapter 4: Anchors; Everything from slinging trees to retrievable ice screws, bounce testing to non-anchor anchors. Chapter 5: Rappel; Here we start putting it all together, covering the core theory of descent, including back-ups, knots, and optimum set-ups. Chapter 6: Lowering; This covers both standard lowering off sports routes and backing off climbs, to more advanced self-rescue lowering, passing knots etc. Chapter 7: Advanced; This long chapter deals with pro techniques, many that will be new to many climbers, including blocking, ghosting and single rope rappels.
