Adjustment To International Competition

This report builds on 2 types of research on the structure and performance of Canadian manufacturing industries. One line addresses industries of domestic producers who serve the small Canadian market in competition with imports and is concerned with the productive efficiency of these industries but not with their short-run responses to international competition. The other line concerns the short-run sensitivity of responses of the manufacturing industries' prices, output, and employment levels to disturbances, focused on responses to domestic disturbances but not international. Using annual data on many individual industries, the study builds a statistical model of adjustments to changes in international competition such as changes in prices and varieties of importable goods, and in Canadian tariffs and the exchange rate. It tracks the effects of those changes on the selling prices of Canadian producers, quantities of imports and exports, and the key input decisions of employment and capital expenditures. It draws conclusions about these adjustment processes for the typical manufacturing industry but also shows how these adjustments vary among sectors and types of industries.

Throughout this unprecedented crisis which is hitting all major economies in the EU, the escalation of the Eurozone recession increasingly undermines public confidence in the ability of competitive markets to deliver positive outcomes. A debate on the most appropriate way to enforce competition rules, in light of the crisis, is definitely useful. A “relaxed” stance to competition during difficult periods may be tempting and indeed, this has often been the approach used in the past. However, the enforcement of competition rules is no less important during times of crisis than during normal periods. It has also been argued that, when public resources are stretched to the limit and businesses are struggling to survive, competition authorities should seek to focus their limited resources on those anticompetitive practices which are most detrimental to consumer welfare such as cartels. Indeed, if over-enforcement is perhaps undesirable when the economy is functioning well, it will inevitably become more problematic during an economic downturn. In addition, business managers may be increasingly tempted to resort to anticompetitive practices when faced with economic hardship. This book will appeal to judges and lawyers in competition law, European law, business/corporate law and insolvency law ; the study of European competition law, European institutions, national competition authorities, and companies.

This original study examines the extent to which international labour issues have become issue of concern within the European Union, the ILO, the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), and the WTO (World Trade Organization).

This book reviews the historical evolution of U.S. monetary policy, and then uses various methods such as mathematical models and econometric analysis to study the impact of U.S. monetary policy adjustments on the domestic economy and the spillover effects on the world economy. Finally, it summarizes the challenges faced by the Chinese economy in the post financial crisis era and proposes relevant countermeasures and suggestions for China to respond to U.S. monetary policy adjustments.

Structural adjustment programmes are the largest single cause of increased poverty, inequality and hunger in developing countries.
