In recent years many countries are moving from a system where the costs of funding higher education are shouldered primarily by taxpayers, through government subsidies, to one where students pay a larger share of the costs. From the Preface: This report reviews the considerations that guide decisions of 81 Canadian companies in their voluntary financial contributions to universities across the country. It was undertaken by the Conference Board's Canadian Office in response to a request from a group of these companies, anticipating that their own search for guidelines is shared by others, in view of the new perspective of needs confronting Canada's universities which is now clearly visible over the next decade.
