Where surveyed land has been offered for sale for several years with out buyers, such Offered lands may be purchased in large tracts for per acre. Most Of the best lands of this character, considered with reference to their nearness to market, etc., have been sold. The bulk of the lands, however, have been so offered, and are open to actual settlers only under the home stead and Pre-emption laws. Under these laws within a railroad reserva tion a settler can obtain 80 acres of land; or if he had 80 acres before, may obtain 80 acres additional, making 160 acres altogether. Everywhere else he can obtain 160 acres of vacant government land. Under the Pre-emption law he obtains his landoby actually settling on it, and paying for it $i.25 per acre 18 months after settlement, and obtains his patent. Under the Homestead law he pays the Land Office $22 whentmaking hissettlement, lives on it five years, then provesvthe fact by his neighbors, and pays $i0 additional and Obtains his patent, which inakes hirri full owne'r.
