During the 1970s, grassroots women activists in and outside of prisons forged a radical politics against gender violence and incarceration. Emily L. Thuma traces the making of this anticarceral feminism at the intersections of struggles for racial and economic justice, prisoners’ and psychiatric patients’ rights, and gender and sexual liberation. All Our Trials explores the organizing, ideas, and influence of those who placed criminalized and marginalized women at the heart of their antiviolence mobilizations. This activism confronted a "tough on crime" political agenda and clashed with the mainstream women’s movement’s strategy of resorting to the criminal legal system as a solution to sexual and domestic violence. Drawing on extensive archival research and first-person narratives, Thuma weaves together the stories of mass defense campaigns, prisoner uprisings, broad-based local coalitions, national gatherings, and radical print cultures that cut through prison walls. In the process, she illuminates a crucial chapter in an unfinished struggle––one that continues in today’s movements against mass incarceration and in support of transformative justice.

If I told you the power of leaving anxiety behind and having positive, joy-filled days was as easy as reading this short book, would you believe me? No worries, I wouldn't either. However, I hope you will join me on a journey to see if you can convince yourself anxiety is a choice that we all have the power to choose to endure or let go. So many areas in our lives cause us anxiety, stress, worry, depression, etc. When we consider all the trigger points for these challenges we face, we must find the root or the core of what brings all these negative feelings and emotions. One of the underlying struggles we all deal with is the desire to be normal. We never want others to look at us and think we aren't "normal," or better put, "like them" (from our own perspective). When we look at the world around us, don't we find the biggest group of people who seem to be similar, and then we try to be like them because they are the "normal" ones? It feels silly just saying those words, but so many live by them. Do we really want to be like everyone else? The T.R.I.A.L.S. method has helped me in my journey to help others reduce stress in their lives. I have developed this acronym hoping to help us all find practical ways to overcome stressful situations and anxiety. T = Transparency R = Responsibility I = Intentionality A = Appreciation L = Limits S = Simplify At the end of each section, we will look at practical ways to implement these principles to reduce your current stress levels. There will also be a section of discussion questions at the end of each chapter to use for personal growth or group studies. Understanding T.R.I.A.L.S. has the potential to bring a tremendous amount of joy to your life. I encourage you to have an open mind and be optimistic about the possibility of reducing your stress and eliminating anxiety from your daily routine. The power to choose lies within you!

Our existence is fragile. I learned that in many intricate ways, so I do not take today for granted. I do not know what tomorrow will bring. I do not even know if tomorrow will come. On the eve of Thanksgiving 2016, I received the diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer. Next to dying, I fear the spread of cancer to my brain and losing my ability to think, speak, or write. This loss would be devastating to me.The fragility of our life made me want to be authentic. Therefore, I am writing this memoir to be authentic--we become our true selves when we author who we are. I am afraid of being forgotten. Death does frighten me. But more than dying, I am scared of having no one remember me or, even worse, of being recognized differently from who I was. At the same time, I have never thought that I was entitled to ask others not to forget me. But, not to be forgotten is precisely what I yearn for. While I am writing for the other, I am simultaneously writing for myself. I am one of the readers and will test the subject as it gets written. My criteria are stricter. I want to say, "This is my narrative."I need to be able to say, "This is my narrative."

"You can choose to see a trial as a roadblock or an expressway. If you see it as a roadblock, it will obstruct your way. However, if you see it as an expressway, you can use it to learn and grow." "The gospel of Jesus Christ is the plan whereby we can become what God wants us to become. In fact, we become great people because of our trials, not in spite of them." This booklet reviews the nature, origins, and purposes of adversity and includes suggestions on how to patiently trust in the Lord and His eternal plan and how to use these trials to learn and grow stronger.
