Bridie gets a job as a maid on Sir Ian of Seaton's estate and, much against her better judgement and will, falls in love with Sir Ian's brother's step-son, also called Ian. Ian optimistically feels that his father will understand and let them marry but Bridie expects what she gets - dismissal, with Ian threatened with the loss of his inheritance. Ian then gets involved with a burglary on the estate and is killed and Bridie, on hearing this, deciding she can't bear to live with Ian dead, goes out into the snow, lies by his grave and freezes to death . . . In The Apple of Eden it came to pass that the devilspeedily proved himself to be much more shrewd than any future shrew could ever have hoped to be, and it went without saying that it was also pretty clear that he was also much wiser than any Great horned owl ever could have given a very loud hoot about. 2 Nor did Adam or Eve ever see that steamy cow pie that Lucifer's ox face was quickly throwing at them, within his unseen dimension, when his changing form of that stupid boa was finally behind him, like the very spineless thing that he chose to become. 3 Neither were the most terrible consequences of their disobedience even beginning to sink deeply into the mind's of that very first man and woman. 4 For they weren't wise in any of their ways yet, since they were still far too young and reckless to resist Satan's most masterful real twisted charms. 5 'Twas therefore the foreseen time when Lucifer fully became the lawless one, as well as the most fearful hour of the birth of that master of manipulation, who was always destined to become the number one sultan of the reddest blood splatter, and the Grand Turk of the whitest lies at the very same time. 6 But it was also the very uneasy moment when that son of the very best deception would finally transform into the Czar of the blackest magic, and the very weird moment additionally, of some of the most amazing moments, when that clown of clowns first signed on, to become the one to preside over as much puss as possible, which would slowly come forth from green infected places of rotting flesh, always oozing out pretty slowly, like some real death-inviting-germs of the very worse kind. 7 'Twas also the awful time of paradise lost, the terrible time of transferred authority, the horrid time of tears, the uneasy time of a multitude of fearful fears, along with the tearful time of regret, as well as the time of no more time for Man to live in innocence any longer. 8 But it was additionally the most terrifying time of lost hopes, abandoned dreams, and misplaced loyalties since confusion poured over Eden like a hard hitting torrent. 9 'twas also the unpleasant time for the vision to die, along with the time for God Almighty, our Most High, to be forced into having to write some brand new rules. 10 But to give that real dirty-dealing new devil his due, it goes to the credit of his ingenious that he was pretty believable when he said, "Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." 11 For that liar of liars dared to tell the truth, and some lies in the very same moment. 12 After all, he was able to say what he did with some real convincing conviction; For Satan knew very well that they wouldn't physically die through their actions. 13 For it was a very sure thing, that God was only talking about their spiritual death. 14 But that was a fact which went way over the heads of Adam and Eve. 15 Nor was the rest of what Lucifer said false in any way. For that scuzy scuz knew beyond a shadow of doubt that their eyes really would be opened up very wide, as wide as their mouths would unexpectedly fall very low, once they realized that their birthday suits didn't even have any wrapping to cover them all up.

The tale that had just been told to him was one that he had heard before from other lips, in other fashions. Not many times certainly, for morality in the wilder and extreme country parts of Ireland is maintained at a high standard by reason of that innate spirit of almost ignorant simplicity which pervades everything. Had he heard it more often, might it be possible to say that that expression of sensitive contempt would have given way entirely to that of religious pity? It cannot certainly be guaranteed. The city breeds that which the country cannot sustain; and moreover the nature of a man is not content to wait for him outside the door of a confessional. He had heard it before, but not quite under the same circumstances, and it is after all by the circumstances of our sins that we must be judged, by the motives of our virtue that we must receive reward.
