An Enduring Partnership For Development

The Asian Development Bank has partnered with the Government of the Maldives since 1978 to help in the country's development. The partnership has yielded substantial improvements in various sectors of the economy, with particular emphasis on tax administration; energy development; maritime transport; regional development; micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise development; and economic policy and public financial management, among others. As the country continues to make impressive gains in attaining its economic and social goals, the Asian Development Bank stands ready to work together with the Maldives to help fulfill its development objectives.

This publication showcases stories of successful partnerships between the Asian Development Bank and its member countries in Asia and the Pacific. This publication reflects on the enduring partnership of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with its developing member countries. These 10 stories illustrate how ADB, working with government and development partners, helps citizens respond to the varied needs of each country such as climate change mitigation, access to economic opportunities and social services, and disaster recovery. Natural Disasters in Latin America and the Caribbean: Coping with Calamity explores the relationship between natural disasters and civil society, immigration and diaspora communities and the long-term impact on emotional health. Natural disasters shape history and society and, in turn, their long-range impact is determined by history and society. This is especially true in Latin America and the Caribbean, where climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of these extreme events. Ranging from pre-Columbian flooding in the Andes to the devastation of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, this book focuses on long-range recovery and recuperation, rather than short-term disaster relief. Written in the time of the coronavirus pandemic, the author shows how lessons learned about civil society, governance, climate change, inequality and trauma from natural disasters have their echoes in the challenges of today’s uncertain world. This book is well-suited to the classroom and will be an asset to students of Latin American history, environmental history and historical memory.

This book provides new insights into the phenomena of global education policies and international policy transfer. While both of these issues have gained popularity in the field of international and comparative education, there remains much that we do not know. In particular, while numerous studies have been produced which examine how global education policies—such as vouchers, charter schools, conditional-cash transfers, standardized testing, child-centered pedagogy, etc.—are implemented globally, we lack research which illuminates the origins and evolution of such policies. The book addresses this critical gap in our knowledge by looking at multiple aspects of the trajectory of a particular policy which was born in El Salvador in the early 1990s and subsequently went global. Edwards explicitly analyzes the trajectory of global education policy with reference to the role of international organizations and within the larger international political and economic dynamics that affected the overall country context of El Salvador.
