Carshalton started as a village to the south of London. The pub crawl is a British tradition of drunken revelry, requiring many pubs within walking distance, for which Carshalton is well-suited. The book is a sober history of its inns and taverns, brewers and ale houses, through beer houses and hotels to the public houses it has today. It sheds light on local characters and stories, some tragic or amusing, and on the development of Carshalton from Surrey village to a London suburb with a rich legacy of pubs. Drunken revelry is purely optional!

Fragments of an Analytic Pub Crawl traces the journey of my life, its memories, the events and the places where I have been and what I have read. The book title is not to be confused with the traditional drinking pub crawl, it is a way of describing the psychogeographical nature of this book. Patrick ffrench, the writer, described psychogeography as “an analytic pub crawl”, a lived experience – one drifts from one place to the next; observing, noting, reacting. We may drift through a city, or a life and absorb. This is the “dérive”. Charles Baudelaire named this person, the flâneur. Just as the past left traces in today’s built environment, so have we, and so have I. This book traces those memories, it’s part memoir, part history, and part essay, The subjects reflect a variety of interests: growing up in Northern Ireland, the Troubles, my life in IT education, Irish humour, life-skills, reading, writing, music, emigration, family, urban liveability, the pandemic and much much more.

Queer history is a living practice. Talk to any group of LGBTQ people today, and they will not agree on what story should be told. Many people desire to celebrate the past by erecting plaques and painting rainbow crosswalks, but queer and trans people in the twenty-first century need more than just symbols—they need access to power, justice for marginalized people, spaces of belonging. Living Queer History tells the story of an LGBTQ community in Roanoke, Virginia, a small city on the edge of Appalachia.
