Population genetics is the basis of evolutionary studies, and has been widely used in several researches. This recent field of science has important applications for the management of populations (natural and domesticated), as well as for evolutionary studies of the various factors that affect gene frequencies over time and spatial distribution. In this work, presented in three sections (Population and Quantitative Genetics, Genetic Diversity in Crop Management, Population Genetics for Conservation Studies), the reader will find cutting-edge information in carefully selected and revised works. This book is intended for all researchers, academics, and students who are interested in the intriguing area of population genetics.

Rice is a staple food for half of the worlds population mostly in Asia. Productivity of rice has largely been improved since the Green Revolution in 1960s. Further improvement of rice yield is necessary to keep pace with population growth, which is a challenging task for breeders. This book, Rice - Germplasm, Genetics and Improvement, as its name implies, comprehensively reviews current knowledge in germplasm exploration, genetic basis of complex traits, and molecular breeding strategies in rice. In the germplasm part, we highlight the application of wild rice in rice breeding. In the genetics part, most of the complex traits related with yield, disease, quality have been covered. In the improvement part, Chinese experiences in hybrid rice breeding have been summarized together with many molecular breeding practices scattering in different chapters.

Since the first scientific excavations were conducted at Jenn-jeno in 1977, this huge Iron Age occupation mound located in the floodplain of the Inland Niger Delta has produced a classic archaeological sequence spanning 1500 years. Jenn-jeno is widely recognized as one of the most carefully documented cases demonstrating the rise of indigenous urbanism in Africa, and its archaeology has contributed significantly to a major paradigm shift in explanations for the rise of complex societies in sub-Saharan Africa. This monograph presents the results of the excavations conducted in 1980-81 at this site and at two others within the extensive mound complex of which Jenn-jeno is a part.
