Excerpt from Analytical Psychology It will be a relief to many students of the' Unconscious to see in it another aspect than that of a wild beast couched, waiting its hour to spring. Some readers have gathered that view of it from the writings of the Viennese School. This view is at most that dangerous thing a half-truth. Excerpt from Analytic Psychology, Vol. 1 of 2 When I first planned the present work, it was my intention to follow the genetic order Of treatment. But I found my self baffled in the attempt to do this without a preparatory analysis of the developed consciousness. Our knowledge Of mental processes, as we can observe and infer them in our own ordinary experience, is essential as a clue to the nature Of mental process at lower levels. I therefore found myself driven to pave the way for genetic treatment by a previous analytic investigation; and the result was the present work. It must therefore be regarded, even in respect to my own plan of procedure, as a fragment of a larger whole. This will explain certain omissions which might otherwise appear strange. I have passed by whatever appeared capable Of more efficient treatment from a genetic point of view. Thus, I have reserved the psychological investigation of Space and Time, the stages in the development Of self-consciousness and of Will, and similar questions. I may say that my strongest psychological interest lies in certain genetic ques tions, and especially in those on which ethnographic evidence can be brought to bear. Excerpt from Collected Papers on the Psychology of Phantasy I have often been asked to publish the following papers in book form. I have at length done so, chiefly because they deal with points that are matters of constant inquiry. In a collection of papers of this sort there is inevitably a good deal of repetition. I regret this, but it is always open to readers to skip passages, whereas those who are unfamiliar with the terms of analytical psychology will find the repetition not without value. It will easily be seen by those to whom it is not already known, that I am an adherent of Jung's school of analytical psychology, but I have never concealed my great admiration of Freud's work, nor minimized the debt we owe to him for his opportune discovery of dream analysis, and for the formulation of his illuminating theories of neurosis. The adherents of the Swiss School use Freud's technique of dream analysis, and do not repudiate any of his discovered facts, but they repudiate the claim of some of his disciples that he and his school are in possession of the whole They are unable to believe that his interpretation of the facts is always as unimpeachable as the facts themselves. Carpani brings together important contributions from the Jungian world to establish the "new ancestors" in this field, in order to serve future generations of Jungian analysts, scholars, historians and students. This generation of clinicians and scholars has shaped the contemporary Jungian landscape, and their work continues to inspire discussions on key topics including archetypes, race, gender, trauma and complexes. Excerpt from Papers on Psycho-Analysis The subject of psycho-analysis, which may be defined as the study of unconscious mentation, was thus gradually extended as one field after another Opened up, and with increasing knowledge it became more and more possible to trace the indirect operations of the unconscious even where at first sight their existence was hardly, or not at all, suspected. Or, to put the matter in another way, it has become more and more possible to detect the contribution made by the unconscious to various modes of mental activity that have hitherto been thought to be purely conscious in both appearance and origin. Having regard to the primitive nature of the unconscious, one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
